LS&A at-large candid

2. Minority Recruitment:. Increased
effort must be directed toward the
fulfillment of the BAM demands.
There must be more recruiters, more
money for recruitment, and better sup
portive services.
3. War Research: It is a desecra-
tion that in a university dedicated
to humanist values, effort is spent
in the development of more efficient
ways of dispensing with human life.
Such efforts must be stopped. In ad-
dition, all classified research must
be reviewed by an open board comprised
of people from both the University
and the larger community.
4. Low Cost Housing: With the pas-
sage of the allocation referendum,
SCC will be in a unique position to
become directly involved with low
cost housing. Possibilities include
applying for a HUD building loan,
and for private financing.
5. Women: Sexist practices must be
removed from the university communi-
ty. Free day-care centers should be
established, as well as interest-
free loans for abortions.
6. Recruiting: All recruiting by
companies that practice racist ex-
ploitive policies must be banned
from campus. The recruiting policy
of the OSS Policy Board must be made
campus-wide.
7. Exclusionary Rule: The exclu-
sionary rule must be eliminated ex-
cept in cases of most extreme ne-
cessity, and then only after due pro-
cess in front of a student judiciary.

AS A CURRENT MEMBER of Student
Government Council, it seems to me
that the following issues should be
-given highest priority by the Univer-
sity community in the coming year.
1. Union of Student Workers: For
too long the student part-time work-
ers of this university have been sub-
ject to open exploitation by the uni-
versity administration. The time has
come for the formation of the Union
of Student Workers.

Rebecca Schenk is also standing
for SGC President. For her plat-
form, see page 2.

The reasons of many of the students
seeking seats on LSA Student Execu-
tive council are very much the same
reasons that I have chosen, but the
major difference is the fact that I
have a sincere desire to accimplish
something.
The desires of the entire student
body and the desires that I possess
are concerned with many of the issues
that affect student .life directly.
Since LSA encompasses a massive
student body, I feel that it requires
direct representational leadership in
,aiding the student body. There is al-
ways the necessity for a governing
body to initiate proposals for affairs
that concern the student body, both on
a personal and legislature levels and
as a student in LS&A. I feel that I
possess the necessary concern about
many of the issues to affect student
life directly.
There are several specific issues
that I am deeply concerned about and
I will convey some ideas that I feel
might be helpful in bettering LSA
Student Government in representing
the masses.
In order for the LSA Student Gov-
ernment to be truly representative of
the student body they need to add on
other services, such as a student sur-
vey and complaint service. The stu-
dent survey would depict the true is-
sues that the students are concerned
about. It would also assist the mem-
bers of LS&A Student Government in
eliminating issues that were of lit-
tle importance and give priorities to
those that were according to the stu-
dents. The complaint service would
again be directly representative of
the desires. of the students and it
would be helpful in initiating imme-
diate change that they may be seeking.
Student parity on decision-making
boards is quite pertinent at this
time. This would give the students a
chance to find out what's going on be-
hind closed doors and to become in-
volved in the decision-making at this
university so that the masses of the
students can constructively express
their opinions. An example of this
would be the pass-fail option which
is extended to upper-classmen.
The LS&A student government trea-
surer is leaving, because I have de-
finite experience in this field, again,
I think I would be a definite asset
as a member on the council. I felt
that because of my desire to unself-
ishly relinquish and render my ser-
vices so that your education here at
the university, within the next year
can be a meaningful one, that I can
best represent you.

As every candidate, myself included,
will affirm, our campus is presently
approaching an important crossroads.
Many important decisions that will
greatly affect the present student
body are going to be made in the very
near future. For example, the fol-
lowing issues are under consideration
by various student and administrative
agencies: classified and military
research, on campus recruiting policy,
construction of low cost student
housing, establishment of a Universi-
ty food co-operative, etc. At this
time, an effective, representative
student government leadership is cru-
cial. Further, for the student gov-
ernments to be effective, they must
also be unified..
I believe that my views are rep-
resentative of the opinions of the
LS&A student body. Due to constraints
of space, I will only discuss my
views on the more sailent issues in
the hope that they will provide a
representative sample.
I believe that all classified and
military research projects should be
thoroughly investigated by a stand-
ing committee composed of students as
well as faculty members, at an open
forum. The purpose of the investiga-
tion would be to determine the intent
or goal of the research project. If
the intent is to maim or kill human
beings the research should be termin-
ated, if the research does not fit
into the. above category it may be ac-
cepted, but only on a de-classified
basis. As concerns on campus recruit-
ing, I believe that another, similar
committee should be formed to inves-
tigate those firms seeking University
facilities for recruitment purposes.
If any firm is found to practice any
sort of discrimination, they should
only be allowed use of University
facilities if they are selling to
pay for them. I fe'el that this solu-
tion to the problem is an adequate
one in that the rights of the students
desiring interviews are preserved
while the University is no longer
forced to subsidize discrimination.
Finally, I support the formation of
a university food co-operative, as
well as a University child care cen-
ter and construction of low cost stu-
dent housing.
Considering all that is a stake
in this election you cannot afford to
sit on your apathy and refrain from
voting. If you don't exercise your
own rights no one else can.

Responsible Alternative Party (cont'd)
Keeping all recruiters off campus deprives our students
of their right of choice when looking for jobs. But I am
against any coporation on the University campus that dis-
criminates because of race, sex, or any other reason.
I firmly support the People's Peace Treaty and its de-
termined student effort to end the war in Vietnam. T PlSo
believe that the "Army should find other places to train
officers (West Point, Naval Academy, etc.) and would like
to see ROTC moved off campus.
I stand behind the Housing Policy Board's proposal for
additional University housing of 1000 apartment units by
1975 with 250 completed by 1972. I would work for lower
dorm rates and for a student-run University grocery store,
similar to the U bookstore, to ielp cut food costs in Ann'
Arbor.
Eacn and every issue that arises should be viewed ob-
jectively and with an open mind. If elected, I would do
my best to respresent what I believe are the desires of
the majority of the University community.
Jack Whyte.
AS EVERY CANDIDATE, myself included, will affirm, our cam-
pus is beset with a variety of serious problems. Examples
are easily cited: classified and war research on campus,
unfair treatment of students, oppression of blacks as well
as women, etc. The list is discouragingly long. Yet,

this list, and probably most others, fail to mention the
single most dangerous threat students face. All of the
items listed above fall into a simple and obvious pattern.
They are all characteristic of threats from without, and
they ignore the threat from within. That threat is stu-
dent apathy.
Many of us had gained hope that once again students
would play a major role in a systematic restructuring of
society in a move toward greater and ultimate equality.'
And we had good reasons for such hope, e.g. the Washington
D.C. demonstrations, the McCarthy campaign, our own BAM
strike, etc. But as we all know, the war drags on and ra-
cial injustice continues. Any objective viewer of the si-
tuation cannot help but reach the obvious conclusion that
student concern and student activism is slowly dying. This
is not to demean the efforts that a handful have relentles-
sly put forti. cut in a country of 200-million or even a
campus of 40,000, it takes more than a handful to effect
meaningful change.
Part of the blame for this apathy lies with the students
ts, but the present Student Government Council must also
share in the guilt. It is the responsibility of the elec-
ted representatives of SGC to lead as well as inform the
student body. It is my opinion that the present council
has not adequately performed these duties.
MY PURPOSE in seeking office therefore is to provide
more adequate representation as well as leadership for the
students of the University of Michigan.

Bill Jacobs.
