finally paying off. Now, well, I
look at the car and I don't even
like it. I mean. I don't like what
it represents."

Bing signs with Pistons;

"eDETROIT - Dave Bing, Detroit Piston's star guard, who play-
ed out his option this season, has signed to play for the National
Basketball Association team for two more years, General Manager Ed
Coil announced yesterday.
Bing, who reportedly also has signed a contract to play next sea-
son with the Virginia Squires of the American Basketball Association,
signed a three-year contract which covered the season just ended
and the next two seasons. The 6-3, 180-pound guard who came to
the Pistons as a first-round draft choice from Syracuse in 1966 de-
molished the Detroit record book this season. He set a team season
high of 2,213 points - an average of 27 a gane - and raised his ca-
reer total to 9,360, another record.
The status of Bing's contract with Virginia remains clouded. A
Piston's spokesman said he understood Bing had worked out an agree-
ment with the Squires that allows him to play in Detroit.
! HOUSTON - Walter Byers, executive director of the NCAA,
took a shot yesterday at pro teams for signing undergraduate basket-
ball players. He said he felt any damage to amateur athletics would be
temporary.
"The pros say they are signing these players to help the colleges,"
said Byers, here for the NCAA basketball championships.
"I say it is an economic armlock on the athletes."
'With one or two exceptions, I've never seen any pro people who
felt any concern for athletics," Byers said.
0 BERN, Switzerland - Veteran Anatoli Firsov, a 30-y e a r-
old winger, fired four goals last night, leading the Soviet Union's
National team- to an 8-0 romp over Sweden in the World Hockey
championships.
The victory gave the Russian skaters a two-point lead over the
Swedes in the standings. The Soviets have won the tournament eight
straight times.
. LAUSANNE, Switzerland - A stringent new proposal designed
to tighten protection of the amateur code in Olympic Games was made:
public yesterday by the International Olympic Committee.
A key clause in the proposed rule would bar from the Olympics
any athlete who has "directly or indirectly allowed his name, his pho-
tograph or his sports performance to be used individually for adver-
tising purposes."
