Richard Newell, Love-Lies- Bleeding Music, BMI King Biscuit Boy must have had tonight's NCAA basketball s e m i- finals in mind when he wrote those lyrics to "Cookin' Little Mama," cause both games promise to be real "hot" ones. Rough-and-tumble Western Ken- tucky will battle Villanova at 7:30 and the rangy Kansas Jayhawks will pull out the stops at 9:30 in an attempt to unseat incumbent national champ UCLA. Both games will be played in Houston's aesthetically mind-bending Astro- dome. Clarence Glover and Jim Mc- Daniels powered Western Ken- tucky through the bruising Mid- east Regional with wins over Jack- sonville, Kentucky and Ohio State. While the 7-foot McDan- iels provided the Hilltoppers with scoring punch, 6-8 Glover dom- ineered the boards and sparked closing spurts which pulled West- ern through in close games with Jacksonville and Ohio State. In the J-ville tussle, Glover knelt slyly near the basket, pre- tending to lace up his red Con- verse, as his teammates prepared to bring the ball inbounds with two seconds left. As play began Glover jumped to his feet, waved for and received the sphere, and shovedin a cherry pick to give Western a 74-72 win. Against Ohio State Glover grab- bed three rebounds and scored four points in the final minute of overtime to give the Toppers an 81-78 win. Villanova will match their ex- cellent big man, 6-8 Howard Port- er, against the McDaniels-Glover duo. Porter used his unstoppable turn-around jumper to collect 35 points last Saturday as Villanova romped to an unexpectedly easy 90-47 win over the previously un- beaten Quakers of Penn. Villanova outshot Penn by 61 per cent to 30 per cent and dom- inated the Quakers from the open- ing tip. Porter got a lot of help from center Hank Siemiontkowski, who had his greatest floor per- formance in collecting 20 points. Villanova will likely dump their touted zone defense on Western Kentucky, but the Hilltoppers are deadly from outside, with McDan- iels being the finest outside shoot- er of the nation's big men. West- ern may hurt Villanova with their aggressive man-to-man pressand should emerge the winner in to- night's game. UCLA, still the odds-on pick to take their fifth straight N C A A crown, barely survived their re- gional final against Long Beach State and should have trouble with Kansas. Rumor has it that Bruin mentor John Wooden will try to neutralize Kansas' superior size with a killer zone press. Long Beach gave UCLA fits by switching from a 1-2-1 zone to a 2-3. The Uclans have been troub- led by the press all year, thanks mainly to the decline of H e nr y Bibby as an outside shooter. Bib- by, deadly last year, has had dif- ficulty finding the range this sea- son and his shooting percentage have hovered around 35 per cent. Sidney Wicks and Curtis Rowe, the finest pair of forwards in college basketball, and teammates Steve Patterson, Kenny Booker, Terry Schofield and Steve Farm- er will join Bibby in action to- night for UCLA. in NCAA semis begins i CARNATION INSTANT BREAKFAST 7.2 OZ. HELT EXCELS: Bat smen trounce Weber State I Kansas has rolled to a 27-1 season behind twin 6-10 peaks Dave Robisch and Roger Brown. Robisch copped tournament MVP honors in the Midwest Regional after leading the Jayhawks to the title with 19 points in a close win over quick, scrappy Drake. Power in the backcourt will be provided by Pierre Russell and swingman Bud Stallworth. Stall- worth is very dangerous from out- court and Kansas' number two scorer this season behind Robisch. Ted Owens, the Kansas coach, says that his Jayhawks "can't have less than a great game to have a chance to win." } -- ... ,_ Special To The Daily BUTTE, Montana, Pete Helt! fired a nifty three-hitter yester- day as the Michigan baseball team upped its record to 4-3 with an 8-0 win over 'Weber State.
