Bank MEET STYLISTS: BOB DASCOLA JERRY ERICKSON (formerly of Maple Village-Arborland) Open Mon.-Sat. i i Houston awaits NCAA's elite - - PR By CHUCK DRUKIS With the regionals finished, four teams still remain with dreams of an NCAA basketball championship. All the losers can do is second guess what they would have done if they had it to do all over again. "I think we've got our horse- shoe in our back pocket now," said Coach John Oldham of Western Kentucky, "but I sure hope it's not the same one Joe Hall had." H a 11, Kentucky's assistant coach, flipped a horseshoe on a table after his team 1 o s t to Western, saying it had come off Kentucky Derby winner Proud Clarion. "I kissed it, I did ev- erything, but it didn't help," . Hall said. Clarence Glover was Oldham's good luck charm. Glover spark- ed Western to the Mideast title Saturday as he grabbed three crucial rebounds and tossed in four points in the final minute of an 81-78 victory over OSU. The seventh-ranked Hilltop- pers squeaked by Jacksonville, and blew Kentucky off the court to earn the right to meet the Buckeyes. Ohio State led most of the way, but Hornyak threw an errant pass to a11ow the 'Toppers' to tie the game and send it into overtime. Despite his performance, Glov- er did not make the Mideast all-tournament team. The team included Western Kentucky's Jim McDaniels, named MVP, OSU's Luke Witte and Allan H o r n y a k, Marquette's Jim Chones and Dean Memminger. After shellacking Penn, 90-47, to w in the Eastern regional, Villonova, loser to Michigan in the Hawaiian Rainbow Classic, placed three players on the all- tournament team. They w e r e Howard Porter, Hank Siemont- kowski, and Chris Ford. Porter paced the Wildcats against Penn with. 35 points and 15 rebounds as Villonova shot an amazing 61 per cent in con- trast to Penn's 30 per cent. The Kansas Jayhawks are ap- plying for a patent on late min- ute victories. Each of Kansas' last six games has been won in the last minute or less. During their 73-71 victory ov- er Drake, coach Ted Owens told his Kansas team, trailing 39-38 at the half to "get the ball into (Dave) Robisch." The Jay- hawks did, and Robisch poured in 19 points. "We were stiff in the first half," Owens said, "Just too tight and it showed." Robisch was named the tour- ney's outstanding player. UCLA's -two point victory over Long Beach State was its closest call in tournament play since 1963, a year in which it actually lost the NCAA championship. Since then the Bruins have won 26 straight tournament games, a record, en route to six nation- al crowns in the p as t seven years, also a record. Sidney Wicks committed his fourth personal foul with just two minutes into the second half, seeming to k ill UCLA's hopes. With 7:47 to play, he re- entered the game to dominate the boards and make four free throws to win the game. Wicks was named the tourna- ment's outstanding player.
