Tired of half-cooked quaddie
burgers? Tired of those obnoxious
clods down the hall? Tired of shar-
ing a bathroom with 20 other peo-
ple? Maybe it's time to take that
"momentous" step into the world
of apartment-living.
However, one soon discovers that
finding an apartment is not as sim-
ple as re-registering for the dorm.
Other vigilante groups may beat
you to just the place you want,
empty houses disappear, and land-
lords up rents just when you were
ready to put your money down.
Sometimes in the course of apart-'
ment hunting, you discover that
maybe you won't get on with your
roommates as well as you thought
you would. As the inevitable de-
bates arise over whether to go
modern or traditional, as poten-
tial roomates decide to live in co-
ops or go to Europe, the advan-
tagesrofrapartment living slowly
seem questionable.
While the Off-Campus Housing
Bureau cannot remedy all of these
problems, it does provide assist-
ance to potential apartment-dwel-
lers in many ways.
The Bureau, located on the sec-
ond-floor of the Student Activities
Building performs the following
services:
-keeps a formal registration re-
cord of landlords and rental prop-
erties;
-lists vacancies as they become
available;
-lists vacancies for students who
have apartments or houses and
who need roomates to share the
facilities and the expenses;
-lists apartments or other ac-
commodations for students when
they wish to sublet if the address is
registered with the bureau by the
landlord;
-supplies a Student Rental
Agreement to registered landlords
who will use it;
-reviews other leases which,

for troubled

-maintains close liaison with the
Ann Arbor Department of Building
and Safety;
-helps to interpret leases to stu-
dents if they bring them in for the
bureau to examine;
-provides a sample of the Stu-,
dent Rental Agreement to any stu-
dent who wishes to use it as a guide
when examining other leases he
might be offered; and
-helps women find jobs in pri-
vate homes where they can earn
their complete board and room (a
few jobs are offered to men each
fall.)
Off-campus housing is primarily
found in apartment buildings
around campus, though there are
a small number of rooms and
houses available.
Most apartments are in new or
relatively new buildings, which will
be filled with groups of single stu-
dents as a rule. New efficiency
apartments which have been de-
signed for two single students aver-
age about $160 a month plus elec-
tricity. Most apartments, however,
have been designed for three, four,
or five students, with a price range
from $60 to $80 per person per
month.
While most are furnished, they
sometimes do not have a desk for
each person or enough end tables,
lamps, or pillows. They are in-
variably carpeted throughout and
most have room air conditioners.
The more plush apartments have
fine furniture, dishwashers, and
central air conditioning. A few
buildings have swimming pools,
study rooms, party rooms, and T.
V. lounges.
Apartment buildings don't al-
ways offer parking facilities. While
future buildings in Ann Arbor must
provide parking facilities, build-
ings presently without parking fa-
cilities are not required to provide
them.

There is very little available nowj
in older, inexpensive apartments,
and such buildings are usually
found by chance. If fit to live in,
it usually will be snapped up by
the first person who makes an ap-l
pointment to see it.
Very rarely are one-man apart-
ments available for $100 a month.
Also rare are two-man apartments
for $125 a month. Therefore, only
luck or ingenuity will find such a
place for apartment hunters.
There are quite a few rooms
still available each year though
the number is diminishing. Linens
and cleaning are sometimes pro-
vided in these rooms, but not al-
ways. They are only furnished with
the necessities for sleeping and

studying.
Some rooms are shabby while
others are luxurious in beautiful,
private " homes. Once in a while,
one finds a small rooming house
with kitchen privileges. If the place
is clean and the landlord maintains
it as such, this is a very good fi-
nancial arrangement if all one
wants is a place to cook and a
modicum of privacy.
Another way to economize is to
take a room near an Inter-Cooper-
ative Council house and eat meals
at the ICC house. Sometimes fra-
ternities offer meals to students
who are not members, while some
frats and sororities are now taking
in non-members for both room and
board.
It is almost impossible to sublet
a room during the- summer, so it
is advisable not to sign a twelve-
month lease for a sleeping room.
There is' a very large demand
for single family houses by groups
of students but unfortunately there
are not many available.
The beauty of sharing a large
family house with several other
students is that each person can
have his own bedroom, while the
other facilities are larger than in
most apartments. For instance,

Campus
Bedroom

most houses have dining rooms,
porches and basements.
The price for a furnished house
varies from about $50 to $80 per
person per month. The rents. on
houses usually do not include util-
ity costs.
Having found the apartment you
want, (or the one you're stuck'
with), you must sign an application
or a lease and put a deposit down
on the apartment. Whatever you
must sign, it is important to read
it and understand it.
The landlord will also ask you to
pay the rent for the first and last
