The early season failures and
holiday successes of the Mich-
igan basketball team are history
as the Wolverines travel to Wis-
consin to meet the Badgers in
today's Big Ten inaugural.
A win in the conference open-
er is needed to regenerate the
Wolverines' new-found momen-
tum and to establish their role
as a genuine title contender. Ac-
cording to coach Johnny Orr,
confidence is running high af-
ter the team's impressive tour-
nament showings.
"The young kids really got a
lift from the holiday wins," Orr
said. "Our whole attitude is very
good at this point." Orr called
the 103-87 shellacking of tenth-
ranked Villanova in the con-
solation final of the Rain-
bow Classic, "our finest game
since I've coached at Michi-
gan," and, although the team
has yet to prove that it can
play consistently well, they have
proven to themselves that they
have the ability to beat any-
body.

HOUSTON - Four members of The Associated Press All-Amer-
ican football team' were selected yesterday as finalists for the first
annual Vince Lombardi Award honoring the nation's dollegiate line-
man of the Year.
Vice President Spiro Agnew will present the award at a dinner
January 21.
The finalists are Larry DiNardo, offensive guard from Notre
Dame; Chip Kell, offensive guard from Tennessee; Rock Perdoni,
defensive tackle from Georgia Tech, and Jim Stillwagon, defensive
guard and linebacker from Ohio State.
The winner will receive the granite Lombardi Award Symbolizing
discipline and dedicated to the memory of the late Green Bay and
Washington coach who died in September of cancer.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Bob Blackman, new headfootball coach at
the University of Illinois, named an eight-man staff of assistants yes-
terday including five of his former Dartmouth aides.
Blackman, 16-season coach at Dartmouth, retained three assist-
ants of former head Illini Coach Jim Valek, including J. C. Caroline,
Ellis Rainsberger and Jack Robinson.
Joining Blackman from his Dartmouth staff will be Walt Ander-
son as chief scout-coach; Gary Golden, defensive line coach; John
Jackson, offensive backfield; John Nelson, offensive line, and Carl
Meyer, freshman coach.

certainly must be considered
one for both teams.
Both offenses are built main-
ly around the ability of o n e
man: Wisconsin's Sherrod and
Michigan's sophomore-sensation,
Henry Wilmore. The 6-3/2 Wil-
more has played brilliantly in
his first ten games, but he'll
need plenty of help from the
other starters if the offense is
to move.
Ken Brady is gaining exper-
ience in the pivot and is improv-
ing every game. Senior R o d
Ford came on strong in the
Rainbow Classic, leading t h e
team in scoring in the Hawaii
game and in rebounding against
St. Louis, and captain Dan Fife
is quarterbacking the offense
with greater proficiency.
But the key to Michigan's
success in the early going has
been the fast-break. If the team
is running and Fife leads th e
break as hehas shown he can,
the Badgers will be hard-press-
ed to stop the Blue.

Coming off of a strong showing
In the Midwest Open, the Michigan
wrestling team opens its Big Ten
season today at Purdue. The- Boil-
ermakers, who defeated Michigan
in a dual meet last year, have per-
haps their best team in 20 years,
and are expected to provide stiff
opposition for coach Rick Bay's
young squad.
Seven of Purdue's ten regular
wrestlers from last season return,
making what was formerly a weak
team a growing power. Their vic-
tory over the Wolverines in 1970
was the first since 1957. So far this

season, they have lost only one
dual meet, and Bay considers them
definitely "on the way up."
That one dual meet loss was to
Penn State, a traditional power
in the East. After the first f o u r
weights, the Boilermakers led 11-
2, but with three of the last six
regulars not competing, they fail-
ed to score again and lost 24-11.
Two of their missing grapplers
were men who defeated their
Michigan counterparts last season,
and both will be present for the
meet today.
Purdue will be led by Bill An-
drew, a 126 pounder who last year
defeated Tim Cech 6-4, and will
be looking to repeat that perform-
ance. Roger Foscz and Mike Cer-
qiua, two of the men who missed
the Penn State meet, provide fur-
ther strength at 177 and heavy-
weight, respectively.
The Wolverines will counter
with a very young but extremely
talented lineup that will include
four freshmen, two of whom will
be making their collegiate debut.
The newcomers are Rick Neff at
134 and Bob Huizenga at 167.
Neff is not entirely inexperienc-
ed, however, having participated
in exhibition matches at N a v y
and Maryland earlier in the sea-
son. Huizenga won his position
from Tom Quinn in practice dur-
ing the week.

The other two freshmen compet-
ing today will be Jerry Hubbard
at 150 and Walt Sexton at 190.
Both are unbeaten in dual meets,
and Hubbard finished a strong
fourth in the Midwest Open, los-
ing only to defending national
champion Larry Owings of Oregon
State (on a referee's decision) and
to the great Dan Gable, former
two time NCAA titlist from Iowa
State.
Jerry Hoddy, captain of t h e
team, will lead off at 118. Hoddy
won his - first four matches in
the Midwest Open before bowing
out in the semifinals to the de-
fending Big Eight champion,
Steve Lampe of Iowa State.
He will be followed by T i m
Cech, who has been moved down
to his natural weight class at 126.
Cech and Jim Hagen will now
battle before each meet to see who
will compete.
Mark King at 142 had been a big
disappointment prior to the Mid-
west Open, but showed progress by
winning four matches in the tour-
nament. Sophomore Mitch Men-
drygal won his matches at Navy
and Maryland, and followed up
with a strong showing in t h e
tournament.
In the upper weights, the Wol-
verines will feature Sexton, Ther-
Ion Harris, and Rick Bolhouse.

The goal of this course is to develop an analysis of how social
change is and can be produced in American society. The
course is relevant to the political needs of students since it
recognizes political activity as a legitimate part of the learn-
ing process.
It will be made up of Study-Action Sections and weekly topical debates.
The Sections will examine appropriate theory, will demotrically deter-
mine political actions to test that theory. In the debates, reformist and
revolutionary actions will be considered as possible strategies for social
change.
