Page Six THE MICHIGAN DAILY Tuesday, February 16, 1971 ' Cartier chits' 1 I By TERRI FOUCHEY The girls in the third grade physical education class at Berns Park elementary school have the distinction of being the only .peo- ple to completely tie up defense- man Punch Cartier this year. Of course, unlike opposing for- wards and defensemen, they used ropes insteads of sticks and pucks. Cartier describes the incident, "I'm in an observation class and one day the teacher split the kids up and gave me charge of the girls. I couldn't keep them quiet and I didn't know what to do and all of the sudden they were all around me with their jump- ropes. They put the ropes around my legs and arms and I couldn't move." His proficiency in removing obstacles from his path has earned Cartier the reputation of a hitter and the favor of Michi- gan fans. "When faced with a pos- sible impediment to his progress. he will do everything in his power to avoid being immobiliz- ed. Eight-year-old girls are the only people who really give him trouble. Coach Al Renfrew offers sev- eral reasons, aside from hitting, why fans enjoy Cartier. "He's a tough player and one of his big- gest assets is undoubtedly his ability to hit. Unfortunately, col- lege hockey rules tend to neu- tralize this ability in any play: r with the restrictions on check- ing. He has a lot of power and a good, hard, heavy shot. He's also good at carrying the puck." Defenseman Jerry Lefebvre who often pairs up with Cartier feels this is one of his strengths. "Punch has a great ability to control the puck at all times, which means he can also control the game. He has this move where he'll delay for an extra second when he's got the puck and someone's near him. The guy will skate by him because he thinks he's going to shoot or pass and then Punch will keep going with it." He continues, "He's the kind cf defenseman who c a n t a k e chances and never make a mis- take. He'll stick in the offensive zone and the forwards might beat him out, so that it's three on me, but he always wins the battle to get back and help." >O a charter realty apartment 0 665-8825 GOQT THE WINTER WEARIES? "When he's caught out of position he's good at getting back into play. He's also fairly well defensive-mind- ed which helps a goalie a lot." His hitting and defensive- mindedness can be traced to ball hockey games played in the streets of Montreal and to foot, ball. "I used to love to play goal in ball hockey because I used to love stopping pucks. "In football I played middle linebackertand that involves a lot of hitting. When I started hockey I wanted to hit and de- fense is the only place you really get a chance to. Also, I wasn't very fast and I still iiked stop- ping pucks, so I'm a defense- man." Cartier now finds several deeper purposes for playing hoc- key and defense. "In society you can't really be physical, but in hockey you can really give it to them. It offers kind of a letup. It's a good fast game and it's a skill. Everybody wants to per- form a skill and have a mastery of something. It also fills the need of competition." He characterizes his basic style as "You have to go get them rather than let them come at you. You have to let them know you're there. He adds, "Obviously the main part of the defenseman's job is not to have goals scored and that means helping the goalie by get- ting the puck out of our zone." The move which Lefebvre re- ferred to Cartier finds useful as a fake. "It's sort of a 'let him do his move and I'll do mine' deal. I'll do something to invite, him or fake him into his and then I can judge it and decide what I'll do. It's a game of chance, but it's better to have the last word before chance takes over." The troubles the icers have been having lately have necessi- tated a bit of shifting in the de- fensive corps, which usually means that the same players will not be paired for too long. This brings up problems of adjust- ing to a new style every game, but Cartier sees it as a possible solution to a bigger problem. "Of course it's better to be with somebody for a while be- cause each can adjust his indi- vidual style to the other. I'll know if he'll be in the corner and if he's not, where he will be. We all adjust pretty quickly, though." He feels his main resnonsibility to his partner to be, "to let him know where I'm at and to co- operate with him all the time. We all like to set up plays just between the defense, our own deals, like the forwards, where we'll rush up the ice." The partner who compliments his style best is "offensive- minded because I'm slow. He has to be able to carry the puck. He can go into the corners be- cause I'll cover for him. On de- fense, he should take tne puck and I'll take the man because I play the body more." On the power play Cartier is the only defenseman with four p forwards. He feels he has a good shot and that's why he's out there. Renfrew agrees with this impression. Another reason Car- tier feels he's there is "there has to be at least one who is defensive-minded in case of emergency.' Last sea- son only one teammate surpassed his penalty minutes and he had to sit out several games as the result of misconducts. "The coach told us that we'd have to cut down on penalties if we were going to do anything. So I made a resolution to try to be cool. Fighting doesn't bring anything and I'm needed more on the ice than in the box. Now J count to 10 and go over to the bench. But it doesn't hurt any one if I yell a lot, so I'm trying that more. "By spending more time on the ice I've increased my scoring because I've got more occasion and maybe I've helped the team." -Daily-Jim Wallace Punch Cartier winds up One time when Cartier didn't help his team was when he ws in junior hockey and he scored a " goal in his own net during the finals against present roommate Mike Jarry's team. In between periods after this disaster his mother came to the locker room and gave him two Saint Jude medals which he put in his Jock for the rest of the game. Saint y. Jude is the patron of hopeless causes and he must have been paying attention to Madame Car.. tier that night. As he describes it, "I scored two goals and we won. I still wear the medals, too." Maybe if Madame Cartier sem all the Wolverine icers Just one Saint Jude medal perhaps they might lose their status as an al- most hopeless cause.
