They are rousing, charm- ing, dated sing-along chants, and they got perhaps the warm- est reception. His more recent political songs, Rivers of Revo- lution and Masculine American Man ("I am the masculine American man / I kill, there- fore I am"), lacked the famil- iarity of the earlier composi- tions, and the audience reacted less warmly to them. Try-outs set for musical A one-act musical sketch, "Johann Orpheus", has sched- uled try-outs for Thursday, Jan- uary 28. The story, based on the Orpheus legend, calls for four men and four women. The play is being produced in conjunction with the February Ann Arbor Drama Festival to be held at the Canterbury House the 26 and 27 and at the Social Work Aud. Feb. 22. The Drama Festival is bring- ing together an assortment of theatrics from Gureilla theatre to modern dance, including chil- Idren's shows and workshops. Auditions are from 3-5 p.m. in room 2518 of the Frieze Bldg. The mixture became more and more paradoxical as Ochs- sang Bells, Changes (one of his most famous works, and a new song about the late James Dean en- titled Jim Dean of Indiana. All three are very much in the typ- ical folk genre and w e r e, at least ideologically, in sharp con- flict with t h e political songs. And where in Ochs' cosmology can one possibly locate his straight but tongue-in-cheek version of Merle Haggard's Okie From Muskogee? The entire set was very dis- jointed and confusing . Phil Ochs, who is blessed w it h a beautifully pure choirboy voice, makes the mistake of n e v e r varying his vocal style. Every- thing"really does sound the same, no clues amidst the mess as to where Ochs' guts reside. The lack of variety leaves one fairly bored and remarkably perplexed. Ochs himself ends up seemingly remote and detached, going through the old-time folk singer act which no longer has the old zing to it. On the whole, it was an ev- ening which could only euphem- istically be called lok-key. There was a mood throughout the pro- gram which bordered on the sui- cidally depressive. This is not to say that it is these people's duty to put on a Good Show for us somnalent masses; but it is always a depressing symptom when a sick society insists on churning out such sick music.
