Page Six THE MICHIGAN DAILY Saturdav, January 23, 197' ... Si.H.MCIAN DIY audaJnur 3.17 t Bea ties: From riches to rags Ii LONDON MI) The Beatles, who roared out of a Liverpool basement eight years ago to turn a fortune by singing rock songs, now are in the red to the tune of a, million dollars, a lawyer told the High Court this week. Their accounts were in such "lame~ntable shape," said attor- ney David Hirst, that all. four singers, plus their company, might be unable to meet their tax commitments. Hirst, representing Beatle Paul McCartney, 28 year-old guitarist and song writer made the assertion to dissolve the partnership. He said McCartney also insisted on an accounting of the mrillions he, John Len- non, Ringo. Star and George Harrison, have earned in their revolution of the pop world. None of the Beatles attended the hearing. Lawyers for parties in the dispute, huddled after the morning session and agree to delay a full hearing for a month. Wives' translator wins poetry award Richard Wilbur, highly re- ~ garded American poet, whos e new verse translation at Mo- liere's School for Wives will nake its debut in Ann, Arbor January 26 -February 7 under the auspices of Prof esional Theatre Program~, has just been awarded the prestigious Bollingen Prize.,in Poetry. Professor Wilbur, who is on i the English faculty at Wesley- an University, was kited for "distinguished and continuing contributions to American po- etry.,, The announcement of the $5000 award, which is adminis- tered by Yale University and presented 'every two year:,. was made this week 'in New ::raven, Connesticut. PTP will present the Phoenix Theatre production of School for Wives in a premiere prior to New York in Mendelssohn Theat- tre, where Wilbur's earlier ver- sion of The Misanthrope made, a successful debut under the same sponsorship in 1968 before its hit New York run. Stephen Porter who staged The Misan- thrope will also direct 'Wilbur's version of School for Wives. Wilbur has received :tumer- ous literary citations, including the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, The Edna St. Vin- cent Millay Memorial Award, and has published six volumes of poetry. He was co-author with Lillian Hellman of the Hirst accepted this only on the condition that money due the four, and their company, Apple Corps, Ltd., would be channeled into a joint lawyers' fund until that time. McCartney started the row with a suit on Dec. 31. Hirst said his client never had ob- tained an accounting for the past. four years until then and only Monday got draft acmounts "which suggest there probably is not enough in the kitty to meet even the individual Beat- les' income tax and surtax lia- bility, let alone the company's corporation tax," Prime target of McCartney's suit was Allan Klein, the Beat- les' American manager, who took over after the death of Brian Epstein, discoverer of the mop haired singers. Hirst said the accounts Me- Cartney finally got showed the Beatles, separate from the coin- pany, had a credit of $1.7 mil- lion, Income tax owed totaled-- $1.5 million-and a conservative estimate of the surtax above that would be about $1.2 million. On this aspect alone, he said, the Beatles owed about $1 mil- lionm The Apple company's cap- ital tax is yet to be estimated. Hirst said McCartney never had accepted Klein as manager "nor trusted him and I shall submit that on the- evide~ice hi,; attitude has been fully justi.- fied." It's anyone guess how many millions the Beatles hia e re- ceived in dollars, pounds and other currencies around the world from record sales movies and performances. All four are married, in their late 20's, and haven't done a joint operation for sever'al yoan-~ They all live like million~aires although Lennon, the far -out wizard of song writing, said about a year ago he is down to his last $144,000. It seemed like a jest at the time, The continuing public ac- claim, however, produces an in- come that is likely to keep the wolf from the door. In the set- tlement reached last Tuesday, attorneys for both sides agreed on the funds to be placed in es- crow until the full hearing. These include $3 ;million re- ceived from associated ;ompa- nies, $2.4 million owed to the partnership by associated com- panies in Britain 25 per cent of all gross receipts, and $1.1 mnil- lion in McCartney's royalties from Emi, a giant in the :nus~cal1 industry.
