IA r t j 7 7 ° r 2 " I . By CHUCK DRUKIS The Michigan Rugby Foot- ball Club begins its regular sea- son Saturday battling the De- troit Cobras in Detroit. Unlike other years, the rug- gers this year are going to be more backfield oriented, rather than the traditional reliance on the scrum. In the past, Michigan h a s strongly relied on the scrum not only to get possession of the ball, but also to provide a scor- ing punch. This year the pre- season hope for success a p - pears to lie in the backs to pro- vide the basis of the scoring thrust. To the rugby fan on the side- lines, backs carrying the ball is much more exciting. Aggressive runs by backs are faster than slow drives up the middle of the field and much easier to fol- low. The main reason for Michi- gan shifting its emphasis to the backs is that last year's start- ing backfield is returning, along with several new prospects. Pete Hooper, Rory O'Conner, Chuck Holt, Ron Smith, Cl e- land Child, Ross Vickers a n d Captain Terry Larrimer will all be back for another season. Richard T h o m a s, Andrew Thornburn, and Brock Landry are three players new to t h e Michigan team who should add depth to the backfield. The forwards, however, w il l have the task of rebuilding. The whole front row will be dif- ferent, from last year. Steve Chapman, a veteran player, will become one of the top props, but the other prop and t h e hooker are still questionable. Ron Storey, a Welshman, will probably play number eight re- placing Jacques Passino, w h o will move to the second row. Surprisingly enough, the scrum has done as good if not better than the backs. The eleven game fall sched- ule appears to be the toughest in several years. There will be six home games, and five road contests. Passino, who is also president of the rugby club points to three outstanding rugby clubs t h a t should provide the stiffest com- petition to Michigan. "If we can beat University of Toronto, Chi- cago Lions, and Palmer," says Passino, "We'll indeed have a good season. Palmer especially will be tough." The home games will be play- ed on Palmer Field immediately following the home football games. The rugby club is the largest on campus and growing every year. The club continually is seeking new players. Any play- ers who are still interested in going out for the team should contact Terry Larrimer at 665- 6520. After two weeks of practice and one preseason tournament, the general physical condition of the players is progressing satisfactorily. Captain Larrimer sees to that. "I believe that rugby can only be played in top Lacrosse Club-Organizational Meeting - Fall Session. Fri., Sept. 10, 7 p.m., Rm. 131, Busi- ness Administration Building. Equipment Issue: 10 a.m.-noon Sat., Sept. 11, Yost Field House. Practice: Mon., Sept. 13, 4:30- 6 p.m., Ferry Field. Deadline for all entries in the I.M. golf tournament, to be held Saturday and Sunday, is 5 p.m. today. Softball competition begins Monday but entries do not close for the Independent division un- til Thursday. Officials are still needed for softball and football. Anyone interested in officiating should contact Dick Pitcher at the Sports Building, 663-4181. physical condition," said Lar- rimer, "but we don't run a foot- ball training camp. We do some running and calisthenics, but we leave much of the condition- ing to the individual to do on his own." Dr. John Robspn is back for another year as head coach. Robson is invaluable in pointing out mistakes that the player himself may not even realize. Robson's extensive knowledge of not only the basics of the game, but also advanced techniques provides a well organized rugby team. Thus at the start of another season, Michigan Ruggers a r e ready and eager to conquer the challenges. Smokey's friends don't play with matches. 0 * Dn t GET Get a Doghuse- BET!
