Doubt one way or the other could well be removed after tonight's meeting in Milwaukee between the cagers and number two rank- ed Marquette. The teams carry identical 3-0 records into the battle, with both eking out meager one point vic- tories in the preceding games. The Warriors boast 6-11 junior center Jim Chones as their big man. Chones averaged 17.9 points per game last year, coupled with 11.4 rebounds to -rate rave re- views all over the basketball world. Chones hit on 57 percent of his shots from the field in 1970-71. Thus far this season, Chones has raised both his rebounding and point averages to 12.3 and 9.6i respectively. Marquette's other big gun is senior Bob Lackey, a 6-6 for- ward. Traditionally, Coach Allie McGuire's teams have featured the seniors in the major scoring roles and this year the benefactor will be Lackey. He has already, raised his scoring average to near- ly 18 points per game from the 13 point mark he had last year. Rounding out the powerful War- rior lineup are 6-3 Allie McGuire, 6-1 Marcus Washington and 6-9 Larry McNeill. McGuire, the coach's son, returns as the third hold over starter from last year's squad. McGuire is the floor lead- er of the team and tops the as- sist category for the Warriors, McGuire is hitting at about sev- en and a half points a game so far this season. Coach McGuire's two starting cagers rtanic s sophomores bring distinguished records with them to the varsity. Washington and McNeill carried high averages as freshmen last season and are hitting at a com- bined rate of 26 points per game this year. Marquette opened the sched- ule with a trouncing of unknown St. John's of Minnesota, 89-50 with Chones taking the scoring honors with 24 points. The Warriors followed by crumbling Bowling Green 84-64 led by Lackey's 21. However, Mar- quette ran into a little difficulty with Memphis State. The Warriors were down 73-72 to the Missouri Valley Club before reserve forward George Frazier hit a 25 foot jumper at the buzzer to pull them out of trouble. Against Marquette, coach John Orr will start Ernie Johnson,,Hen- ry Wilmore, John Lockard, Wayne Grabiec and Dave Hart. The match up of Wilmore against Lac- key, the Warriors top defensive player, should prove interesting. Wilmore, averaging 29.3 a game, had a poor shooting night against Eastern Michigan last Tuesday, hitting on only 9 of 29 from the floor, and is shooting only 43 per cent from the field so far. Grabiec has been the hot shooter, carrying almost a 20 point average and shooting a spectac- ular 52 per cent. Lockard, who has drawn much praise from Orr tackle truggle on his improved play, is hitting for nearly 16 points a game, while Hart and Johnson each stand at just over nine a game. The rebounding load has been divided up equally among the frontliners, with Wilmore and Lockard pulling down in excess of 14 a game, and Johnson clawing about ten caroms a contest. Orr has characterized the Wol- 4 verines' performance as being "so- so basketball, but for five to eight minutes a game, we've played super basketball, and it's been enough to winthe ball games.'' Orr, although pleased with the team's 33-0 record, acknowledges that "We'll have to be at our very best to stay in the game." The Wolverines may get some relief from the fact that Allie Mc- Guire probably won't be in the line up for tonight's contest. He has been hampered by an infec- tion and reserve Gary Grzesk will likely be in the backcourt when * the game begins. The Warriors, who have won 58 consecutive games in Milwau- kee, are not taking the Wolver- ines lightly. As most of Michigan opponents do, Marquette seems overly concerned about Wilmore. Chones, a teammate of Wilmore's at the Pan American games in Co- lumbia last summer says, "He can do everything well. I don't think people realize how good he is., Name Wilmor Grabiee Lockard Hart Johnson Tyler Buss Bazelon Rea S.
