CHICAGO (JP) - The Big Ten
rescinded its no-repeat Rose Bowl
rule yesterday but buried another
controversial item-volatile Woody
Hayes - under a blanket of no
comment.
A Big Ten source said that ac-
tion on the outburst of Hayes,
Ohio State football coach, during
the season's final game, which
Michigan won 10-7 at Ann Arbor,
is "something we would keep with-
in the conference family."

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (RP) - The six
black players on Cornell Univer-
sity's varsity basketball team boy-
cotted the Big Red's 95-82 loss to
Syracuse last night in what was
reported to be a protest against
an alleged quota system at Cor-
nell for Negro athletes.
The boycotters included Cor-
nell's two top scorers this season:
Brian. Wright, a sophomore for-
ward from Brooklyn, and Jeff
Howard, a sophomore guard from
Bridgeport, Conn.
The others were co-captain Tom
Sparks, a senior forward, also

from Bridgeport; Carmel "Skeed-
er" Stewart, a sophomore guard
from Brooklyn; Otis Story, sopho-
more guard from Jamaica, N.Y.,
and John Coles, a junior center
from Washington, D. C.
The players showed up early in
the game as r Syracuse was hold-
ing a 22-8 lead and took seats in
the Manley Fieldhouse balcony
above the Cornell bench. They
watched the game impassively
and refused all comment to re-
porters.
In a statement, varsity coach,
Jerry Iace, said:

Professional League Standings

"Six black basketball players
did not make the trip to Syracuse
with the team tonight because
they have questions and griev-
ances. I plan to discuss the situ-
ation with the rest of the squad."
Iace refused to comment beyond
that statement, and a Cornell pub-
lic relations man said the coach
"doesn't want to say anything that
might jeopardize his relations now
or in the future with the players."
Campus sources said, however,
that the protest was believed to
stem from the blacks' contention
that Cornell has an unofficial pol-
icy of playing no more than three
blacks at one time.
The Daily Sports Staff ex-
tends an ecstatic welcome to su-
perstars John and Yoko Len-
non and cordially invites them
over to 420 Maynard tonight for
a grand tour of the Senior Of-
fice,.business office, shop and

Pistons get number one pick;
Bucks deal off Greg Smith
By The Associated Press
DETROIT-The Detroit Pistons announced last night that they
have agreed to accept the Phoenix Suns' No. 1 college draft choice
of next spring in exchange for center Otto Moore, involved in a
controversial trade between the two clubs.
Originally, the Pistons had expected to get 7-foot center Mel
Counts in the trade. But litigation arose over the question of whether
Moore belonged to the American Basketball Association or he
National Basketball Association.
HOUSTON-The Houston Rockets gave up their No. 1 choice in
next year's college draft yesterday to obtain Greg Smith, a starting
forward for the world champion Milwaukee Bucks.
Forward Curtis Perry was sent to Milwaukee and the trade's
exchange of draft choices gave Houston Milwaukee's No. 3 position.
OAKLAND-The California Golden Seals placed right winger Tom
Webster on the disabled list yesterday and said his future as a hockey
player "is very questionable" because of a congenital spinal condition
that requires surgery.
Webster, 23, played in only a handful of games for the Seals after
being acquired from the Detroit Red Wings early in the National
Hockey League season.

Wayne Duke, the new Big Ten
Commissioner, said "absolutely no
comment" when asked if any dis-
ciplinary action was taken against
the dean of conference football
coaches.
It was learned however, that
Hayes' emotional episode was dis-
cussed not only by athletic direc-
tors but also faculty representa-
tives before they ended their an-
nual business meeting yesterday.
Duke said the incident is being
treated as an internal matter. Of-
ficiating was aired at the Big Ten
meetings as it always is without
comment.
Revocation of the no-repeat
regulation assures that only the
Big Ten champion or co-champion
will appear in the Rose Bowl.
Heretofore no school could make
the Pasadena trip more than two
consecutive years.
Unbeaten Michigan faces Stan-
ford this New Year. The no-repeat
rule originally was incorporated
in the contract to. appease faculty
men who shunned post season play
because of academic involvement
through msised classes and outside
stress.
