Last season the Illini blazed through their first ten games with an 8-2 mark, then folded like an accordion and finished the season at a ho-hum 11-12. Nick Weatherspoon, a much- publicized 6-6 junior forward, has averaged 18.3 a game this season in leading his squad to wins over Butler (73-71), Oklahoma (70-65) and South Dakota (96-56). Okla- homa was rated the toughest of the three, having been tabbed by many as this year's probable Big Eight front-runner: Weatherspoon teams with 6-6 Nick Conner to give the Illini solid scoring in the front line. Conner has averaged 16 points a game seek while clearing just over ten re- bounds. While Weatherspoon is un- doubtedly one of the Big Ten's premier players, he hardly rates the All-America buildup given him by Illinois publicity moguls. The Spoon has been shooting a puny .356 from the field so far this season, nothing that will make Henry Wilmore or Jim Chones quiver with fear. Sophomore Bill Morris mucked through summer school to gain eligibility and the center spot for Illinois; so far his stats of ten points and eight rebounds a game haven't lived up to his predicted potential. The 6-9 Morris came to Champaign from Beaumont High in St. Louis, where he was a schoolboy All-America and scored 51 points in a single game. Another sophomore, 6-4 Garvin 0 imp rove Roberson, mans one guard spot and has been scoring at a pace of seven points a game. A split end on the Illinois football team, Ro- berson may take a while to round into shape for basketball. He is judged a fine shooter (61 per cent from the floor so far) and a su- perb rebounder for a guard. The lone senior in the starting lineup is 6-3 guard Jim Krelle who is peppering away at a 15.3 pace with a 62 per cent shooting average. Krelle is the floor leader and almost single-handedly de- stroyed Oklahoma with an unbe- lievable shooting performance. Krelle hit all eight of his char- ity tosses and eight of nine floor shots for a total of 24 points, and come in with either 6-4 C. J. Schroeder or 6-2 Larry Cohen at aard and 6-6 Jed Foster up front. Schro der has been the leading illini sub so far. scoring 14 points The main strength of Illinois seems to be their aggressive de- f nse, which has allowed an aver.: ecor',d season. The Illini trailed Butler )y 13 in the second half of their opener. then clamped a tight press on the Bulldogs and 'edged past them for a 73-71 win.
