Reason contest. At Toledo in their first saw only seven minutes of action game, Eastern Michigan lost in a against Purdue after spraining his thumb against Toledo. And in the time he did play he was ineffective due to the injury. The 6-4 junior playmaker scored .19 against the Rockets in the opener, hitting sev- en of 15 from the field. His play- ing status for tonight is doubtful. The most potent member of the Huron arsenal is super - soph George Gervin. The lanky 6-7 De- troiter, who leads the squad in scoring with 61 points so far, packs a mere 170 pounds on his long frame. His lack of weight poses problems, limiting his ability to fight it out with the 'bigger fellas' under the boards. Eastern Coach James Dutcher has said that Gervin is the best sophomore he has ever coached. And that includes three of his athletes who have gone on to play in the pros. If Reason is unable to start at guard, the Hurons just may move Gervin to the backcourt and start 6-6 Leonard Cole at the forward Jspot. dlaily sports NIGHT EDITOR: BILL ALTERMAN Wolverine Ernie Johnson will be assigned the task of guarding Ger- vin unless Gervin does go to guard, in which case Wayne Gra- biec may take over. As a rule, how- ever, "Johnson always draws the tough defensive assignment," said Coach Snowden. Starting at center for Eastern Michigan will be 6-6 senior, Earl Dixon. Dixon played poorly against Toledo, but last week against Pur- due he pumped for 25 points and 13 rebounds. Michigan will be starting, the same five they've been going with all year; that is, Wilmore and Johnson at forward, John Lock- ard at center, and Dave Hart and Wayne Grabiec at the guards. The Wolverine starters have been spreading the scoring around quite a bit as four of the five have been in double figures in each of the two games. Overall, the game should be fairly close, and the Wolverines' ability to put it away early will depend on shutting off Gervin. As Coach Snowden aptly put the game in its proper perspective, "Last year we weren't sharp for the game, coming off of the three losses (to then top ten members Notre Dame, Duke, and Kentucky). but this year the game will be a good one to watch. We're ready and the squad has a real good at- titude." Coach, that makes all the dif- ference. Needless to say, Coach Dick Honig was quite pleased with the outcome of the game. "That's a very good freshman team we beat," he said. "They're going to beat a lot of teams this season." The hottest Wolverine of all is guard Joe Johnson. In the two games the frosh have played he has scored 57 points, hitting on a fantastic 22 of 36 shots from the field. In addition, he has continued to dazzle the Michigan fans with his drives and playmaking ability. 14 point, 17 rebound performance coming off the bench which sparked the Wolverines to victory against WMU. An optimistic Honig expects even better things from the frosh. "Everything is going well," he said, "but we still have room for improvement. We haven't even neared our potential." Anything can happen'in the freshmen rivalry between Michigan and EMU.
