PESC PROGRAM:
Group meets to chart new
courses on social change

A crowd of 150 students last
night attended the first organi-
zational meeting of the Program
for Educational and S o c i a 1
Change (PESC).
The group, a loose coalition of
about 40 faculty and students,
hopes to provide students a
chance to study societal and edu-
cational change in nontraditional
environments.
Last night group members pre-
sented course ideas and discuss-
ed projects for the coming se-
mester.
Speaking at the start of the
meeting, history Prof. Sam War-
ner described PESC's members
as veterans of various campus
and community political actions
who are "trying to humanize the
environment and the University."
Although PESC has no formal
politics, Warner said members

share a conviction that "there
are things very radically wrong
with this society and it needs to
be very radically changed."
He said PESC aims to begin
"on our own block" to learn how
to change the University and
other institutions. He stressed
that its form will be up to the
students who become active in it.
Adrienne Harris, Grad, also
discussed the problems of con-
tacting and involving community
people who are interested in us-
ing the University as a resource.
She urged those interested in
PESC's relationship to the com-
munity to attend its weekly meet-
ing, today at noon in Room 126,
East Quad.
