Blue I By CHUCK BLOOM The formidable Michigan swim team, greatly strengthened by experienced sophomores and promising freshmen, travels up north this weekend hoping for strong performances against Minnesota tonight and Wiscon- sin tomorrow. Coach Gus Stager has lavish praise for his swimmers. "We are improved in all five aregs of competition." he said. "We are better than we were last year-, depth-wise, ability-wise and strength-wise." The apple of Stager's eye is Jose Aranha. "He was great in the Pan-American games," Sta - ger said, "and he's just as great now, if not better." Aranha will be competing in the 50 yard freestyle and thehindividual medley. The Wolverine squad. as a whole must be respected for its depth. In the breast stroke. Ann Arbor sophomores Pat Bauer, Stu Isaac and Mike Whitaker team up to make a formidable entry. In last year's Big 10 Championships Whitaker placed third in the 100 yard breast- s roke. Freshman Mark Ander- son leads in the 500 yard free- style, while Byron McDonald and Larry Day head the butter- f y. They took second and third, respectively, in the 200 yard event at the Big 10 meet. The diving team will consist of three strong performers: junior Joe Crawford who is con- sidered the best of theftrio. seniriiiJohn Hamilton and fresh- man Dick Quint. Quint was Michigan state diving champion as a high school sophomore and junior, but ran into trouble dur- ing his senior year'. "Dick really had his ears pinned back last year," Stage commented. "But he has been working out very hard and will be a good diver for us." Stager is hoping for a rela- tively easy weekend. "I know we can beat Minnesota; though if we lose diving we could be in trouble against Wisconsin," Sta- ger conceded. The Gophers are led by their Big Ten and national champion diver Craig Lincoln, but aside TO REPLACE MUNN MSU seeks new AD from him they lack the person- nel to defeat the Wolverines. Their best swimmer is Tom & ndivk. who piaced second in the 50 yard freestyle during the Big 10 championships. W i s c o n si n, like Michigan. should be vastly improved. They are a freshman laden squad and will be facing the same inexper- ience problems as the Wol- verines. Their swimmers may be weak but the Badger divers could give the Wolverines a run for their money. "They have two fine divers in David Bush and Tony Roof," said diving coach Dick Kimball. Bush finished third in th- nttionals and Roof was also a finalis . "Without any prac- tice time on their board things could be rough for us." Kimball continued. "Crawford adjusts very well though and will make a good showing. He will give Lincoln a run for his money at Minnesota." Stager will be taking onlythis b.-st sw~mmers on this road trip. The others wil be competing at Eastern Michigan in the Michi- g=n Collegiat" Relays, which will be held at 2 :30 tomorrow.
