The Irish full court press gave Michigan some trouble in the sec- ond half but Buss, Tyler, and Gra- biec broke the press easily in most instances. Wilmore finished with 21 points, nine of them on free throws, and Lockhard added 17. Despite the second half sloppiness of play the Wolverines managed to shoot 47 per cent for the night and out- rebound the Irish 52-40. O'Mara finished as high man for the Irish with 25 while Novak added 23. Board problems at the end of the game spelled defeat for Notre Dame under new coach "Digger" Phelps. Phelps praised "Michigan's fine offensive game," and compliment- ed his own young team for staying in the game until the last six or seven minutes. "We just ran out of gas," he said. The Irish, per- formed well for an all-sophomore squad and showed some flashes of excellence that are reminiscent of Notre Dame's Austin Carr cage quintet of the last three seasons. By JIM EPSTEIN Special To The Daily SOUTH B3END - Michigan's freshman basketball team, led by Joe Johnson with 32 points, knock- ed off the Notre Dame freshman 89-77 last night. John Kantner's free throw with 13:27 remaining in the first half put the Wolverines in front to stay at 11-10. The freshmen reeled off three quick baskets and moved out to a 17-11 lead. Johnson hit for 14 first half points and the Baby Blue went to the locker room with a 47-32 halftime lead. Campy Russell, who finished with 24 points for the game, had a poor first half, having six of his shots blocked and finishing with 10 points. Frosh five fantastic Michigan came out in the first half with a zone press which seem- ed to have the Irish confused throughout the first 20 minutes. Coach Dick Honig, who used the maneuver extensively for the first time last night said, "The key to the game was the first half zone press, they couldn't adjust to it." Late in the first half the Mich- igan frosh were sparked by Bill Ayler, who had three tip-ins and finished the half with eight points. For the game Ayler had 12 points and a dozen rebounds. Russell led the Wolverines with 14 caroms.. The Irish were led in scoring by Gary Brokaw with '28 points, and in rebounding by Pete Crotty with 14. At the beginning of the second half, Michigan increased its lead to 58-36 as Russell hit for two baskets and then hit Johnson with a sharp pass that went for two. Michigan maintained a comfort- able lead throughout the second half and the outcome was really never in doubt. The Wolverines had a degree of trouble midway in the second half on their own offensive boards, which Honig attributed to fatigue. He used basically a six man team, with Johnson and Russell playing essentially the entire game. When the first string was pulled with 1:27 left in the contest, the score stood at 87-72; as Honig was reluctant to go to his bench until very late in the contest. L rebounus.
