Republican speakers SO seek youthi's suppor By KATHY BYRNES Attempts were made last night.to answer the question "What are the Republicans doing for youth?" in a teach-in sponsored by the Republican Liberation Movement, a liberal wing of the Republican party. Liberal Republican guest speakers spent approximately ten minutes on topics considered of interest to youth such as abortion reform and the environment. While each stressed the importance of youth involvement in politics only 25 young people attended the" teach-in. Sen.-Gilbert Bursley (R-Ann Arbor). spoke on abortion reform. centering his remarks on his at- tempts to gain 250.000 signatures in a petition drive to get the abortion issue on the next ballot. Rep. Ray Smit (R-Ann Arbor). noted the public's growing aware- ness of the environmental prob- lems but mentioned his fear that the "people have reached the peak of their awareness and now feel everything is hunky-dorypsince legislation is now being passed." He said that now is the crucial time andvpeople must become more involved. Rep. Mike Dively (R-Traverse City), spoke on the implications of the new age of majority in the state. He said that this new legis- lation - which he sponsored - does not make anybody an adult but rather what one does with it will show who is an adult..
