Holocaust Week included a seminar on genocide, a movie dealing with the concentration camps and speeches by theolo- gians. Rabbi Gerald Goldman says the purpose of Holocaust Week is to prove that "Jewish existence is no longer negotiable." Last night's program was plan- ned to fall on the anniversary of the evening in 1938 when the stores of Jewish merchants in Brlin were first looted by storm- troopers and synagogues de- stroyed. One of the lecturers who was a resident of Berlin, said, "the city looked like a glass factory that night because of the many broken windows, hence the name Cry- stal Night." Prof. Miriam Brysk, the first speaker, dealt with her experi- ence as the daughter of a surgeon who cared for the wounded mem- bers of the east European under- -ground. Prof. Cynthia Haft, from the department of holocaust studies at Hebrew University in New York, spoke next, giving examples of three revolts organized and car- ried out by Jews within different concentration camps. Engineering Prof. Ernest Fon- theim, then told how the Jews 1 1 U.S. terminates shipments Group asks change for research VP (Continued from page 1) "i n d i r e c t" governmental reim- bursement of research to cover such costs as secretarial and staff salaries. -The general emphasis of re- search at the University should be shifted from largely non-directed experimentation to "mission-ori- ented research, in areas such as health, cancer, and environmental problems," according to Overber- ger. The committee conceded that the bulk of the financing of research comes, and willcontinue to come, from the f e d e r a 1 government. Washington supplied $44.2 mil- lion, or about 72.2 per cent of the University's research budget in the 1970-71 fiscal year to help finance 1,500 projects. Most of the expen- ditures supplied by the University itself derive from the budgets of participating departments. In addition to Overberger, the committee members included en- gineering Prof. Hansford Farris physics Prof. Samuel Krimm, med- ical Prof. John Weller (internal medicine), geology Prof. James T. Wilson, and psychology Prof. Alvin Zander. President Fleming has not yet appointed a successor to Norman in the vice-presidential post.
