Page Eight THE MICHIGAN DAILY Friday, I October 15, 1,971 Page Eight THE MICHIGAN DAILY Friday, October 15, 1971 -.- - - - - t Inept By MICHAEL OLIN The last three years have seen Michigan's Wolverines score 135 points against the Fighting Illini. In the last three years, Illinois has not scored a point against Michi- gan. One might say, with a reason- able degree of accuracy, there- fore, that the Illini have not fared too well against the Wolverines in recent years. In fact, Illinois has not been able to beat Michigan since a 28-21 victory November 5, 1966, at Ann Arbor. This year is expected to be no exception. The Wolverines a r e heavy favorites to win their fifth straight from the Orange a n d Blue on Saturday. Illinois, however, despite their 0-5 record, is not read to roll over and play dead just yet. Fir s t year coach Bob Blackman's pro- tegees have shown constant i m - provement each week. It's just that the improvement hasn't been in the form of a vic- tory. This in part may be due to the competition the Illini h a v e faced in the #last three weeks. Their last three losses have been to Southern Cal, Washington, and last week, to Ohio State. As Blackman says, "We're cap- able of beating many teams in the country. But when you play somebody in the Top 20 every week, it's difficult to find your way into the win column." In last week's game, for exam- ple, the Illini topped the Buck- eyes in almost every statistical battle. They outgained Ohio State by 122 yards in total offense, made eight more first downs, and ran 25 more total plays. However, all of these statistics don't show up in the win column, and the one statistic the Illini lost was the most important one: final score, 24-10. Scoring is the one aspect of the Illini offense that hasn't been improving too rapidly, although there has been improvment. In their first three games, the Illini didn't score a single point, but in the last two weeks they have scored three touchdowns and a field goal. This is not to say that Illinois hasn't had the opportunity to score. Seven times this year the Illini have had the ball with a first down inside their opponents 20 yard line and seven times the Illini have failed to score. Four times those opportunities have been first and goal. "I've never been so frustrated in my life," revealed Coach Blackman, "We continue to be our own worst enemy. The little mistakes continue to kill us." The Illini offense is led by junior quarterback Mike Wells. His finest afternoon of the year came last week against Ohio State as he completed 15 of 29 passes for 197 yards. At 6-5 and 215 pounds, Wells is also big enough to run, last week he did just that, for another 58 yards off of the option formation. Wells' prime aerial target is 6-4, 185 pound split end Garvin Rober- son. Roberson has latched onto seven passes for 101 yards, more than anyone else on the team, even though he missed two earlier gam- es. Six of the receptions good for 85 yards came against Ohio State. The Illinois backfield is young and talented. Led by junior full- back Mike Navarro the Illini have piled up 969 yards in 240 at- tempts. Navarro has ground out 241 of those yards in 46 tries for a 5.2 yard average. Navarro's prime running mates have been sophomores John Wil- son, 6-2, 200, and Ed Jenkins, 6- 0, 182. Jenkins, however, is ques- tionable after receiving a kidney injury in last week's game. The Illinois defense has been somewhat less than proficient this year, having allowed 141 points so far, including 52 against the Son- ny Sixkiller led Washington Hus- kies. But last week's showing in- dicates that the Illini do have potential,- having given up only 24 points to the powerful Buckeye offense. The defense line is led by bona fide All-American candidate Tab Bennett. Bennett, a 6-2, 240 pound specimen from Miami, Florida, is characterized by his exceptional quickness. He r u n s the 40 in 4.6 seconds and has the strength to go with that quick- ness. Blackman says of Bennett. "He canhbetas goodas he wants to be. The thing that makes Tab Bennett so unique is his very un- usual quickness." e indeed 0 0 improving" d 4 SHADES OF THINGS to come? Wolverine Jim Betts (23) cracks down on an unidentified Illinois ballcarrier as Illini end Doug Dieken (82) makes a futile attempt to stop Betts. Michigan crushed Illinois 42-0 in last year's encounter. CAREER IN JEOPARDY:e Van Heusen makes your vibrations visible! Styles, patterns and colors that really send out your message. Get with it! () - Elias Stukes, freshman starting cor- nerback on the Virginia Union University football team, died yesterday of complications from a severe neck injury suf- fered in last Saturday's game with Elizabeth City. Coach Willard Bailey said Stukes' death "is, of course, a great shock to me, the team and everybody associated with Elias." A memorial service tenta- tively is set for 1 p.m. today at the university. Stukes, 23, was graduated from Richmond's Maggie Walk- er High School in 1967 and served in the Army, including 22 months in Vietnam. He entered Virginia Union in September after his discharge Irom the Army. opening victory over New York Knicks Tuesday. Dr. Morton Cov Jr., assistant professor of opthamology at the University of Michigan Hospital, said yesterday that the retina was detached. Cox said the condition was a result of the injury nearsighted- ness. Bing is scheduled to undergo surgery this morning. Dr. Cox said that success of the surgery is defined as reat- taching the retina - the light sensitive part of the eye necessar- ily a restoration of full vision in the eye. He said cryosurgery, in which extreme low temperature is used to reattach the retina, would be used. Bing is expected to be hospi- talized for seven to 10 days after the operation. Even with a successful opera- tion, Bing is expected to miss, at least two months of action. The loss of the 6-foot-3, 180 pound fling, even tiemporarily, considerably dampens the Piston's hope of going far in the National Basketball Association this sea- son. An All-Star guard, Bing has led the team in scoring and assists for the past five seasons. Bing, 27, was the Pistons' No. 1 draft pick from Syracuse in 1966. Main at Washington Gridde Pickings Far away, among the craggy peaks of the Himalayas, the ancient Guru sat and contemplated his navel while listening to Poco records. His pet Yak Richie grazed nearby contentedly on the sweet succulent Grass, for he was high up in the famous Himalayan Mts. After many long hours of deep contemplation, the Guru finally removed a ball of lint about the size of a large Ohio State football helmet and cast it down among the mob of screaming Tibetans below. "Alas and alack," he called out in a shrill voice, "For many years and many months I have sat and meditated here, high in the Himalayas, eating nothing but a few drops bf fetted ikker now and then, and yet I have been thwarted in all my attempts to discover the true victors of the Gridde Pickings. And yet I fear that if I do discover this, the strange creatures of the Cottage Inn will not be able to deliver the pizza which I can win (provided I get my choices to the Michigan Daily at 420 Maynard by Midnight Friday) through the fierce Tibetans who surround my wild abode. Just then the terrible leader of the fierce Tibetans below, the evil Ag Gnu, burst in upon the peaceful home of the Guru and shook an ugly looking nine-iron menacingly in the face of the startled ancient One. "The fierce Tibetans below demand an end to the pusillanimous, perilous, periurous, petrifying and pungent pussyfooting going on up here on the mountain." But the wily Guru rebuked him, asserting that "Although they attack my little Yak Richie, I, after all, am still the Guru." 4' VAN HEUSEN SHIRTS SOLD AT 211 S.
