Questions may be mailed to Box 25, The Daily, 420 Maynard St., or phoned into 16-GUIDE, the 24-hour, counseling and referral service. Q. I'd like to know what you would recommend as a book which freely explores the mysteries of sex, with the purpose of allowing both participants to take advantage of its full potential for satis- faction and fulfillment. Is there any such book without the exploi- tative and manipulative overtones which can accompany such works? - J.L. A. I don't think so. On the other hand, I certainly haven't read every book on sex that's in print and I do have some- sugges- tions, to wit: There's more to sex than genitals, and there's more to people than sex. There are a number of books not specifically about sex that you might find interesting and helpful. The one that comes to mind is Sense Relaxation, by Bernard Gunther. It's a book which focuses on our bodies and how we relate to them and use them. d A FRIDAY, OCTOBER 15 DayCalendar Commission on Women: 3540 SAB, 3-5 pm. Garry also charged Tuesday that Citizens for Law and Order, a group which rates judges accord- ing to its standards on leniency, has intimidated all 25 Alameda county jurists by threatening to run . candidates against them if they are "too lenient." Garry said in an additional af- fidavit yesterday that Cook would be unable to give Newton an im- partial trial because he is a mem- ber of the Elks Club, was active in the United States Army and had instituted strict security for! the trial. Garry asserted the Elks discriminates against blacks. Exploitative? Yes. Offensive? Yes. Useful? Maybe so. A book is a tool, and if you're sensitive to what you consider exploitative in it, you can use it to your own ends. If you're looking into the more mundane mysteries of sex, probably the best book you can get is called Our Bodies, Our Selves by the Boston Women's Health Course Collective. It's a beautiful, accurate, thorough course on women and their bodies. It's meant for women, but I sure learned a lot from it and I only wish someone would do a companion book on men and their Ibodies. For straight birth control poop,, there's the Birth Control Handbook from McGill University which is available at the Free People's Clinic on Liberty. Also The Student Guide to Sex on Campus, a paperback, is pretty good. I COULD KEEP going on. Sexual fulfillment, sexual adjust- ment - these are bigger topics than a single book can start to talk about. They're as complex as people, and need as much study. I guess the most important thing is the commitment that you express to not be exploitative about sex and to explore the pos- sibilities in a way that's responsible for and to yourself and your partner. If you've got that, all you need are ideas - and you can get those almost anywhere. Good luck. Q. Can the Pill cause yeast infections? - J.S. A. Not directly, no. But estrogen - an ingredient of all the Pills' on the market today - affects the glucose contest of the vaginal walls and make the environment there a lot more attrac- tive to yeast and fungus. The symptoms are itching, burning on urination, excessive discharge (in women), discomfort at the end of the penis. Treat- ment is simple - generally a locally applied cream for yeast or ten days of oral medicine for fungus. TREATMENT NEEDS to involve both partners if they have a continuing relationship (or even if they don't come to think of it) because there can be a ping pong effect - with one partner re- infecting the other as soon as they're cured. Some of the other things that can cause susceptibility, by the way, may be tight pants or wearing pantyhose over underwear. These tend to trap heat and moisture in the vaginal area, which is just what those little yeasts love best. Another one can be the use of antibiotics for anything - colds, acne, whatever. They kill the natural bacteria in the vagina which normally keep the yeast organisms in check. When the bac- teria go, the yeast goes wild, growing and itching and burning. Ouch- * 1235 S. Why are we so sure? The system we have for $650 is not just a good valueb(although we do think it's actually the best value now available in hifi equipment.) Nor is it just a question of its sounding "good for the money." Our Advent/Kenwood/PE/Shure system is unique among all the systems that can be put to- gether: it is a stereo radio/phonograph system that is nothing less than the right, completely satisfying choice for most peo- ple with a demanding interest in both music and sound-at a price for lower than such a system would have cost just a few years ago. An ambitious claim to be. sure. But one which, from experience, we are not afraid to make. Our $650 system will do the fol- lowing .for you: It reproduces the entire frequency range of all music, without annoying coloration or distortion, at levels which will comfortably fill your listening room with sound. (Wag- nerians and acid-rock freaks not excluded.) It sounds convincing not only on the best recordings, but on the. great majority of. re- cordings and broadcasts of all kinds, It has enough controls and features to sat- isfy your reeds, without making you pay for unnecessary frills. The. Kenwood KR 5150 AM/FM Stereo Re- ceiver is yet another example of the won- derful way your inflated dollar now buys much more real performance in hifi equip- ment than ever before: 33 watts/channel RMS, with less than 0.5% distortion, across the entire audio range. Sensitive FM pe.r-- formance permits the greatest number of stations to be received in truly listenable form. The PE 2038 Automatic Turntable does its job smoothly and reliably; its heavy platter turns records at a constant speed, quie.tly. There is a gentle changing mechanism and a convenient cueing control. The Shure M93E Cartridge transmits all the sound that is on the record, and at a record-saving 2- gram tracking force. Its excellent high fre- quency capabilities complement the fine high frequency characteristics of the Advent Loudspeakers and the Kenwood KR 5150 Receiver. 10 lill ! it .. ° .. . I ilI
