Hapless Illini plod on ward 4 Mu-Rag Cleaners MICHIGAN BANKARD By JIM EPSTEIN The three I's of the Big Ten showed once again Saturday why the conference has slipped from the prominence it once enjoyed in collegeiate football. The Big Ten has the distinction of being able to offer Indiana, Illinois or Iowa to those interested in compiling a mythical 'bottom ten" teams. It took the Fighting Illini three weeks to score a point, but when they finally did; it was to no avail as Sonny Sixkiller led Washington to a 52-14 victory over Bob Black- man's spirited but weak charges. Last week the Illini scored again, which might be an indica- tion of better times ahead, but still couldn't pull off the miracle that would have had to occur for Illinois to knock over Ohio State. Illinois outgained the Bucks 414-292 and 198-8 in passing as Woody Hayes apparently didn't' think anything as advanced' as a forward pass swould be needed against the Illini. Reserve quar- terback Greg Hare, subbing for the injured Don Lamka, threw only seven times, completing two for the Buckeye's eight yards. Rick Galbos picked up 112 yards on 16 carries to lead the Buckeye ground attack, but it was Randy Keith who carried for the first two Ohio State scores. Keith's tallies were all that Woody need- ed as the Illini folded neatly, 24-10. Rufus (Roadrunner) Ferguson took care of, the second L Road- runner picked up 158 yards and scored two touchdowns as Wis- consin crushed Indiana 35-29. The Hoosier's stayed close, but Fer- guson's and Alan (A-Train) Thompson's running coupled with senior Neil Graff's aerials over- powered the visiting Indianians. Graff hit on six passes to flan- one of the best in the country in 1970, allowed only eight of 24 passes to be completed for 69 net yards. Quarterback Garry Danielson' hit on 15 of 20 passes for 300 yards last Saturday to lead his Purdue teammates to a 27-13 vic- tory over a tough Minnesota squad. Darryl Stingley and Rick Sayers each pulled in, six passes, one each for a score, and teamed with Otis Armstrong's 83 yards on the ground to create the of- fensive explosion. Danielson was crunched by Go- pher Mike Perfetti in the third quarter and had to leave the game. He could miss as many as four games which would put a big crimp into the Boilermak- ers' already dim Rose Bowl hopes. 4 619 PACKARD "Quality cleaning at student prices" -7837 761-7837 A U 213 S. His major target of the day was end Alan Dick who latched onto seven passes, three of them going for scores. The third I, the obscure Hawk- eyes of Iowa, met with the worst beating of the week, a 28-3 thrashing from the strong North- western Wildcats. Maurie Daigneau passed for. 256 yards on 18 of 25 tosses and consistently burned the Iowa sec- ondary, According to coach Alex Agase, the Hawkeyes concentrated too much on stopping his team's running and left the passing lanes wide open. Barry Pearson latched on to nine passes for 164 yards and Jim Lash and Steve Craig added seven more between them. The Hawks were successful in blunt- ing the Wildcat runners however. Al Robinson could manage only 52 yards in 22 attempts against the stacked Iowa line. The North- western defense held Iowa to 123 total yards ,and their secondary 4 ILLINOIS QUARTERBACK, Mike Wells (i2), attempts to elude two Michigan defenders in last years Big Ten game. Illinois has picked up from where it left off last year and has compiled an 0-4 record so far this season. WASHINGTON DUMPED: Stanford halts Sixkiller i By JOEL GREER Just one week ago Washington's Sonny Sixkiller appeared on t h e cover of Sports Illustrated maga- zine. Of course, nobody has to be reminded about the Sports Illus- trated jinx. It simply means in- stant harrassment by the e v11 spirits. w Those supernatural powers were indeed present as last year's lead- ing passer ,(18.6 completions per game) and this year's highest scoring offense. (49.8 points per game) both melted like the Wicked Try Our New HAIRSTYLISTS! 0 Jeney-Erickson r Dennis Shaner DASCOLA BARBERS near Michigan Theater For the student body: FLARES by Levi * Farah * Wright LeeI SrMale CHECKMATE State Street at Liberty Witch of the West last Saturday. The Washington quarterback ,was picking himself - off t h e ground all afternoon as the Stan- ford defense seemed content to wave the magic wand. The Indians capitalized on early Washington mistakes to grab a crowd-silencing 14-0 lead. That was all Stanford needed' as t h e Huskies could only match t h e number on the back of Sixkiller's jersey. The 17-6 victory gave the Indians a slight edge in the Pa- cific Eight's run for the roses. Both Stanford touchdowns were set up by the defense as it dump- ed Sixkiller for 42 yards in losses in the first half alone. After Larry Butler crunched, Sixkiller for an 11-yard loss, the Indians took over, on the Huskie 32 thanks to an errant Stanford punt. A few plays later, Jim Plun- kett's former understudy D o n Bunce connected with John Winesberry on a 20-yard scoring strike. B arely three minutes after, the voodoo hit Sixkiller again. This time, the Indians converted a Ben- ny Barnes interception into an .Immediate six points. Substitute fullback Reggie Sanderson slith- ered through the Huskie defense on the way to a 20-yard touch- down run. Stanford grabbed three o t h e r Sixkiller passes as the j u n i or, quarterback sensation suffered the worst afternoon of his collegiate career completing only 12 of 46: passes. Elsewhere, the spirits also had eyes on two long winning streaks. Both Nebraska with 23 straight victories, and Toledo with,27 were ready for the supernatural a n d escaped unharmed. Nebraska opened its defense of the Big Eight title with a convinc- ing 36-0 rout of Missouri. The Tigers managed only nine yards rushing and seven first downs. On the other hand, Cornhusker quar- terback Steve Tagge broke his own Nebraska total offense record slashing 85 yards on the ground and pasingfor another 234 in just three quarters of action. Missouri coach Al Onofrio was overwhelmed at the Cornhusker's 603 yard offensive show. He call- ed Nebraska "a much better foot- ball team" than the Cornhusker squad that grabbed last year's na- tional championship. "They've -got better balance, more poise," he emphasized. "Nebraska has every-, thing." At Bowling Green, Toledo made it 28 straight as the Rockets em- barrassed a fired-up Bowling Green squad, 24-7. The Falcons beat themselves, losing two fumb- les inside the Toledo 25 yard line and committing a plethora of oth- er errors In perhaps the most exciting game of the weekend, Oregon scored twice in the fourth quart- er to upset Rose Bowl candidate Southern California 28-23. The victory was on the line un- til the final gun as Jimmy Jones engineered a last minute rally that apparently rescued the game. for the Trojans. Jones hit wide re- ceiver Edsel Garrison on a 177- yard bomb with 17 seconds re- maining that left the Los Angeles Coliseum fans frantic until they saw the little yellow handkerchief signifying an illegal receiver down- field. The upset was highlighted by the exceptional passing of ti n y 5-8 Harvey Winn and the explos- ive running of Duck back Bobby Moore. r r Billboard i Entries for the intramural all campus bicycle race, the "Wolverine 250" will be accept- ed until 5:00 P.M. today at the Intramural building.
