Among the top ten contenders in the nation playing outside the Big Ten, Nebraska, Texas, Au- burn and Alabama all managed to retain their undefeated status and remain for another week in the race for the national champion- ship. A touch of razzle-dazzle keyed the Cornhuskers' 34-7 rout of the Aggies from Texas A&M. Meanwhile, in the Southeastern conference, the Bear was on the prowl again. Behind the four-touchdown per- formance of halfback Johnny Mus- so, the Crimson Tide of Alabama made mentor Paul "Bear" Bryant the fifth winningest coach in grid fine quarterback Johnny Reeves, victimizing him for two intercep- tions which it converted into scores. In contrast to the displays of awesome offensive power, else- where in the country, defense high- lighted the crucial conference clash between SEC powers Auburn and Tennessee. Auburn's aerial master Pat Sul- livan finally managed to -jenetrate the tough Volunteer defense with four consecutive completions to set up the tying touchdown run. With only 2:44 to go before the final gun, the spotlight again re- verted to kicker Jett as he booted the extra1point for fifth-ranked Auburn's 10-9 winning margin. Another wishbone offense met with more than a little success as Oklahoma devastated Pitt 5527. The Texas-style backfield, tearing a page out of the Longhorns' play book, rolled up 232 yards on the ground, scoring the first five times it held the ball. Devaney says he would like more depth in the offensive line, although he does have four re- turning tight ends and four vet- erans at the guard positions. He is also concerned about place- kicking. The defensive unit seems solid, with the return of defensive end Willie Harper, tackle Larry Jacob- son, and linebacker Bob Terrio to lead the way. They are backed up by an experienced secondary. The Sooners have looked very impressive in non- conference games, including a 55- 29 victory over Pittsburgh last week. Coach Chuck Fairbanks has a veteran backfield returning in run- ning backs Joe Wylie, Greg Pru- itt, and Leon Crosswhite, and senior quarterback Jack Mildren, who is superb at executing the triple-option. The Sooners will try to augment their usual bruising running game with a more wide-open aerial at- tack. This means developing better protection for Mildren, was was forced to scramble for his life most of last year. Another vulnerable spot is pass defense, an area in which the Sooners gave up 1905 yards in 1970. Fairbanks is also looking for a place-kicker. 1971 could be Colorado's year, if the Buffaloes can keep up the pace they've set. After upsetting Louis- iana State and Ohio Stte, what else is there? Well, just possibly a victory over No. 1 Nebraska in their October 30 nationally tele- vised clash. Colorado started the season with excellent veteran running backs and receivers, and a good defense. The only question marks were the offensive line, and the quarter- back spot. However, the new starters, including quarterback Ken Johnson, are gaining the necessary experience and confi- dence rapidly, and the Buffs haven't been hurting so far. If there is a dark horse in the Big Eight, Iowa State fills the bill. The Cyclones believe they have the talent to throw a scare into the pre-season favorites. Almost a complete offense re- turns for coach Johnny Majors, and it made its presence known in the Cyclones 44-20 victory over New Mexico. However, Majors must replace seven defensive starters. With the graduation of Lynn Dickey, Kansas State coach Vince Gibson has changed his offense from a wide-open passing game to a balanced running and passing attack. Leading the Wildcats are running backs Bill Butler and Isaac Jackson. Junior Dennis Mor- rison replaces Dickey at quarter- back.
