He took the Lions' regular quar- terbacking job away from Bill Munson in the 1970-71 season and started all 14 National Football League games of the Lions last season. Munson also played out his op- tion and has expressed a desire to be traded. Other players who played out their obtions include such names as receiver Gene Washington of the Minnesota Vikings, quarter- back Bill Kilmer of the Washing- ton Redskins., defensive back Charlie Stukes of the Baltimore Colts, and running back Donny Anderson of St. Louis. The Notre Dame debacle was the latest in a string of- defeats snatched from the jaws of vic- tory by officiating, which has now gone beyond the "question- able" stage. This time is was a Notre Dame tally after the whis- tle and a Michigan goal that went unnoticed by no one but the refs that did in the Wolver- ines. The Blue stickers took a 4-3 lead into the last three minutes of regulation time on the strength of goals by Carl Burns, Donnie Holman, and a pair by Skip Flanagan. With Notre' Dame on the attack, the official spotted a Michigan slash. When a penalty occurs with play in progress, the referee will drop the delayed penalty flag rather than whistling the play dead immediately, This the official did not do. He blew his whistle, which automatically signalled a stoppage of play;: whereupon Michigan goalie Jay. Johnson let his stick drop and relaxed momentarily. Under lacrosse rules, two four-minute overtimes are play- ed, followed by sudden death, if necessary. In the first overtime, Notre Dame scored to take a 5-4 lead. Michigan came back to tie it in the second on a goal by midfielder Dick Dean, Late in the second overtime stanza, Flanagan fed the ball out from behind the net to Hol- man who caked the goalie out of position and hit the upper right corner of the goal. The disgusted Notre Dame netminder swatted at the ball, rolling it back out into the crease as the Wolverines went berserk. The refs however, failed to see the ball hit the twine and later ruled that the goalie had batted the ball out of the crease, The period ended with the score still deadlocked at 5-5 and the frustrated Michigan stickers were sitting ducks for an open- ing minute Notre Dame goal that brought sudden death to the Wolverines. of battles The Michigan Rugby Football Club hosts the Sarnia Saints and the University of Toledo for four. games today in preparation for the National Collegiate Rugby Tournament next weekend.r The kickoff time for the first game will be 1:30 on Palmer Field with Michigan's Gold ruggers playing Sarnia first with the Blue following.
