FDA to require new labelling
of food to protect consumers

I I

Consumers will soon be able to
determine from the labels of pack-
aged foods their nutritional val-
ues, including vitamin, mineral,'
pltein and caloric content, under
a proposal made last month by
the Food and Drug Administra-
tion (FDA).
FDA Commissioner Charles Ed-
wards, 'M.D., said that the new
program - fully adopted and im-
pl . :ted by, industry - "Could
p de one of the most funda-
mental changes in the history of
food labeling in this country."
"In the past, labeling emphasis
has been on identifying the pro-
duct and its ingredients. T h e
new program encourages labeling

emphasis on the- identity of nu-
trient values," he said.
The FDA proposal outlines the
format and type of ntrient in-
formation that manufacturers must
make available and its placement
on the label if they elect to par-
ticipate in the labeling program.
The FDA's proposal is based on
careful evaluations of tests show-
ing that consumers want and will
use better nutrient information. In
addition, nationwide tests conduct-
ed with FDA guidance by several
food chains within the past year
have compared different labellng
formats for understanding by and
impact upon food ,shoppers.,
The FDA labeling program has,

the endorsement of the White
House Conference on Food, Nu-
trition, and Health, consumer or-
ganizations, nutritionists and food
processors.
The program is voluntary. If
manufacturers decide to add nu-
trition information to their labels,
however, the proposal establishes
a mandatory format and informa-
tion requirement. Nutrient state-
ments must appear either on the
principal display label or on an
information panel to the right of
the main label under the heading'
"Nutrition Information." .

In conjunction with the celebra-

to mobilize the manpower and re-

Macbeth A fine film

moor, at the risk of sounding
flippant, it did little else film-
wise.
'"e other camp, typified by
Orson Welles' version of Mac-
beth, concentrates on the world
of Shakespeare, the atmosphere.
While Welles captured the ruth-
lessness of the age, the perpetual
air of superstition, the dense
fog, and the perpetually swirling
c1ouds, the individual characters
were barely sketched. No one
had before attempted the Her-
culean feat' of integrating the
lush Shakespearean poetry with
visually arresting images.
Polanski, along with artistic
divisor Tynan, has come close.
e interpretations of the peri-
pheral aspects of the play coin-
cide with the individual charac-
terizations. For example, the
heavily sexed milieu of the
movie is mirrored in the actual
treatment of the Macbeth cou-
lge, since, in a casting coup of
sorts, Polanski has given the
parts to young performers,
clearing up the' age-old mystery
of why Macbeth would ever lis-
ten to such a nag anyway (one
can hardly identify with a char-
acter as truly tragic if he al-
himself to be Bella Ab-
zugged into moral submission).
That Lady Macbeth, played ade-
quately by Francesca Annis, is
attractive, opens up, of course,
all kinds of new interpretations
to her insistence that her hus-
band slay King Duncan "to be
more the man." Another touch
flNking the sexual overtones of
the play with the graphic vio-
lenice comes when Macbeth or-,
ders the slaughter of Macduff's
family, and the assassins post-
pone their task to rape their vic-

neither powerful, so as not to
appear an evil ogre, nor so
spineless as to come off as a
medieval Dagwood Bumstead.
The real "meat" of his charac-
terization, though, has been tak-
en away from liim. Whenever
Polanski wishes to project the
inner torment of his tragic king,
he conveniently enters Mac-
beth's mind to reveal an imag-
ination that has guiltily con-
jured up a nightmare of bloodi-
ness. This leaves Finch with the
task of portraying Macbeth at
times when not possessed by de-
mons, which means for the most
part acting drowsy and be-
fuddled.
The only time when any of his
other qualities are allowed to
forcefully surface comes at the
movie's finalet where Polanski
presents a remarkably unpitiable
Macbeth. With the troops of
Birnam Wood descending slowly
upon his deserted castle, Mac-
beth waits patiently, gazing with
wise countenance out over the
hills of Dunsinane. He appears
strangely triumphant. Unlike
Lady Macbeth, he has weathered
his madness, and has grasped,
the inherent folly of life as "a
tale told by an idiot." In the Po-
lanski version, Macbeth projects
Pis feelings of self-pity onto so-
ciety. The treatment of the ,en-
suing sword fights, in which
Macbeth haughtily takes on as
many as six soldiers-at once, es-
tablishes the power and unshak-
able dignity of man at his most
perceptive, courageously able to
stare both life and death in the
face: an exalting finish to a fine
movie.

Sometimes flying standby
is mostly standing by.

i

That's why Northwest came up
with Reserved Youth Fare.
Camping out is great. But not at an airport.
Sometimes, unfortunately, it turns out that way.
Now, though, we've done something about it.
If you have any airline Youth Card, you can
get a reserved seat for 20% off. Make a reser-
vation and when flight time comes, just walk
in and take your seat along with all the other
important people. No waiting. No worrying. No

getting bumped off the plane when you really
wanted to go all the way home.
If you don't have a Northwest Youth Card,
you should. And you can get one at any North-
west ticket office or your campus travel agent.
(Be sure to bring along proof that you're be-
tween 12-22.)
Next time you can't afford to wait, remem-
ber Northwest's Reserved Youth Fare. And call
your travel agent or Northwest Airlines.
