Dia mon dmen flay 0 study Rn Romeo a a i n ol By JIM ECKER The Michigan baseball team is scheduled to open its regular sea- son this afternoon against the Uni- versity of Detroit. There is a bet- ter-than-even chance, however, that playing conditions will be less than favorable. Moby Benedict, in his duo role of baseball coach - weatherman, calls for "some rain and snow and cold weather." No word has been given on a possible make-up date. Benedict's starting lineup is well set, with only second base as yet undecided. The outfield shapes up with Tom Kettinger, Leon Roberts, and Mike Decou from left to right. John Hornyak and Mark Crane, at short and third, respectively, will be tossing the ball across the diamond to firstsacker Pat Sulli- van. John Lonchar gets the nod be- hind the plate, while the encum- bent Jim Koceloski is being press- ed by Brian Balaze at second. "It doesn't matter if a guy hit .400 for me," said Benedict. "Last year doesn't mean A thing." These sentiments indicate that Balaze may have won a job. Also, basket- baller Greg Buss seems to be mak-j Cartain and first-baseman Bill Howe (.339) and third-sacker Dan Sweeney .307) furnish the hit- ting support. Mike Sobczak at short and Bill Turkington at se- cnd round out the infield.. The outfield presents Larry Medowig, Bob Barnett. and Tay- pener today June 10 to July 31--$7/4. Porter, spokesman for the club, hen why told a news conference "we're for- tunate in having a superstar se- lected to receive the first award named'for Kentucky's own super- 1 coach." Rupp, coach at Kentucky for 42 years, was retired last week. Walton led the Bruins to the ED Pacific Eight and NCAA titles and a perfect 30-0 record. By the "regular season" Bene- dict was referring to the Big Ten schedule which begins a week from Friday against Purdue. Benedict has little word on the Titans his boys will tangle with this afternoon. "I know who the umpires are, and I know that we hit from 2:00 to 2:30. But that's about all." In any event, Coach Robert Mil- ler's Titans will field a strong- armed, tight-fielding squad, back- ed by several good sticks. Miller will choose among letter- men Dave Frezza (6-4), Kirk Tay- lor (3-2), and Pete Kreher (3-1) for the mound chores. In the bull- pen Frank Kummer (3-0) provides excellent relief for the starting crew. Benedict isn't surewho Friday's pitchers will be, but Elwood and Helt are out. The two will go against Eastern Michigan's Satur- day afternoon in another double- header. Coach Benedict had this remark on the soggy condition of Michi- gan's Fischer Field: "The grass isn't very pretty, but we'll play on it." #I both schools.
