Ogden Reid, scion here of one of the na- tion's leading Republican fami- lies, became a Democrat yesterday, saying he could not "in good con- science" support the re-election of President Nixon. Reid said he would seek the Democratic nomination for Con- gress from the 26th District in Westchester County, which he has represented for 10 years as a Re- publican. Max Berking, Democratic chair- man in that suburban county, said he "knew of no opposition to Reid's nomination." Berking was with Reid when he! appeared with his wife, Mary Louise, at the Westchester Coun- ty Board of Elections in White Plains to change their registration. At the same time his son Mi- chael, 18, registered for the first time and enrolled as a Democrat. Although Reid, 46, gave his op- position to Nixon and Vice Presi- dent Spiro Agnew as the' main reason for his switch, there was no immediate comment from the White House. Democrats were jubilant, how- ever, especially as they felt Reid's personal popularity might help them carry Westchester - tra- ditionally a Republican strong- hold. It is the home base of Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller and Lt. Gov. Malcolm Wilson. Former Gov. Averell Harriman called to wish Reid luck, as did Rep. Hale Boggs, (D-La.), and Rep. Emmanuel Celler of Brook- lyn, Democratic dean of the House. Lawrence O'Brien, Democratic national chairman, called to say he looked forward to a long and close working association.
