The unbeaten and number- one ranked Vikings now advance' to next Saturday's class A state finals against Pontiac Central, surprise winners over Lansing Sexton in a 62-60 thriller. The two .Saginaw Valley League powers have already battled twice this season, with Flint Northern winning both, 77-62 and 83-71. Yesterday's class A opener was billed as Larry Fogle versus the Vikings. The 6-5 Cooley ace had been hitting in the high 30's all year long and pumped in 37 in his team's 79-76 quarterfinal win over; Detroit Northern. BUT COOLEY COULDN'T get him the ball, as Dennis Johnson' trailed Fogle and a couple other Vikings sagged on him inside. Northern stifled Cooley with an aggressive 2-3 zone and dominated its defensive boards, thanks main- ly to incredible leaper Terry Fur- low. A three-point play by Furlow after a fine inside drive pushed Northern into a 17-12 lead early in the second quarter, then wild- haired guard Rick Jones took over. HI whistled a bullet to an open Furlow inside for two, then popped a 20-foot jumper to give Flint a 21-12 lead. Jones and Furlow teamed up offensively for more damage throughout the quarter and sent Northern into the locker- room with a 36-32 lead. Cooley's Fogle was getting no help from his mates but managed 20 points, mostly on free throws and corner jumpers. Some key offense by Ray Bridges, in for the foul-plagued Johnson, powered Flint in a mid- third quarter spurt which jumped the Vikings from a 40-all dead- lock into a 52-40 lead with 1:08 remaining. From that point on' Fhnt Northern ran roughshod over confused Cooley, which simply couldn't get the ball to Fogle.
