The weather god finally smiled on the
Michigan baseball team yesterday af-
ternoon.
However, the baseball god was only
half as benevolent, as the Wolverines
split a doubleheader with Wisconsin 5-0
and 0-2 at Fisher Stadium.
The Michigan nine seemed to shake
off the effects of playing only one
doubleheader since the spring trip in
the first game, collecting eight timely
hits off the Badger hurlers, starter
Steven Marsden and Jon Dzurak, who
came in to help in the sixth inning.
Blue pitcher Steve Howe spaced five
hits and tallied five strikeouts, keeping
his Big Ten unbeaten streak alive and
preventing the Badgers from initiating
anything resembling a rally.
Michigan opened the scoring in the
second inning. Shortstop George
Foussianes led off with a walk, Jim
Capoferi doubled to left, and first
baseman Tim Miller sent them both
home with a ground single up the mid-
dle.
In the fourth, Foussianes again got
things going with his third home run of
the year, a towering blast that fought a
stiff breeze from right center and
cleared the wall in left.
After retiring Capoferi, Marsden then
walked the next three batters. Only
Miller was able to score, however, on a
bouncer by second baseman Jerry
Paparella.
The Wolverines added one more run
in the fifth inning, when third baseman
Chuck Wagner blooped a single to left,
stole second, and came home on a
single by Foussianes.
In the second game, the Badgers
squeezed out two runs in the first off
righthander Steve Perry. Unfor-
tunately, it was all they-needed in their
2-0 shutout of the Wolverines.
Badger third sacker Mark Mciride
led off with an infield single.- Mike
Zimmerman followed with a base hit to

MICHIGAN'S BASEBALL team had its first home stand of the season yesterday,
a doubleheader against Wisconsin. The Badgers were ungracious guests as they
robbed the Blue batsmen of a sweep, winning the second game 2-0. The Wolverines
won the first contest 5-0.
Express thanks Detroit with 6-0 win
By JAMIE TURNER
Special to The Daily
PONTIAC - For coach Ken Furphy
and the Detroit Express there is some
good news and some bad news. The
good news: the Express won 6-0. The
bad: Detroit doesn't get to play Mem-
phis again until July 10, and by then the
NASL players' strike will probably be
over.
.IT'S TOO BAD because Detroit -
who had not been able to score in two 1-0
road losses - had little trouble piercing
the Rogue substitutes. Detroit exploded
for five goals in a second-half flurry af-
ter taking a 1-0 lead at halftime on a
score by Eddie Colquhoun.
,Reserve Bob Rohrbach accounted for
four of the second half scores with a
number of acrobatic kicks and headers
while Roberto DeOlibeira notched the
other with a left-footed blast for 30 feet

ded the laugher on "Thank-you Detroit
night" at the Silverdome.
But the story of the night was the
possible effects the players' strike
called Friday by Union President Ed
Garvey. The Express lost only two
players, Brien Tinnion and Danny
Vaughn while Memphis was devastated
with all but one regular boycotting
play.
BESIDES VOTING against the strike
action in a team meeting Wednesday,
Detroit players were angered by talk of
possible deportment of non-striking
aliens.
"This is a difficult situation," said
Express coach Furphy. "This is a free
country, right? A democracy, right? I
have a couple of players in Jim Brown
and Johann Scharmann who have only
been with us for one week. They came
here to play because they love soccer
and they wanted to play here in
America.
"But as soon as they get here they are
being threatened with deportation!
They are not even in the union," added
Furphy.
Colquhoun was equally adamant.
"I've got a wife and two kids. I sold my
business and I sold my car just to come
here because I love the game and I
wanted to play in America. But
someone came up to me and said they
would take my livelihood away if I
didn't strike.
"We have got no complaints with the
management here. . . I don't know
about the other teams' situations."
