AMC, Renault join forces,
SOUTHFIELD, Mich. - (UPI) - American
Motors Corp. and French auto giant Renault
yesterday joined in a corporate partnership that will
permit joint automotive sales activities in the United
States, Canada, and parts of Europe and South
America.
Top officials of both firms again stopped short of
referring to the arrangement as a merger, calling it
instead a "substantial association."
THE OFFICIALS signed a sales and licensing
agreement that has been the subject of complex
negotiations for the past nine months.
Under the agreement, many AMC dealers in the
United States and Canada will begin selling and
servicing Renault's front-wheel-drive Le Car within
the next few months and Renault dealers in France,
Columbia, South America, and elsewhere will start
selling AMC's four-wheel-drive Jeep by the end of the
year.

AMC also will immediately join Renault in
adopting a new series of Renault passenger cars for
the North American market that can be
manufactured in the United States.
IN ADDITION, AMC in 1980 will begin importng
French-made Renault sedans and station wagons for
sale in this country.

create a strong bond between our two companies,"
said AMC Chairman Gerald Meyers.

AMC and Renault officials announced an-
agreement in principle last spring to join forces in
marketing efforts, product development and
manufacturing.

killed yesterday in a storm of bullets

stood on a street corner conversing with
friends, a spokesman said.
The slaying occurred on the first an-
niversary of the assassination of the
major foe of President Anastasio
Somoza, a death that sparked demon-
strations against the government and a
bloody civil uprising in the fall.
LUIS ALBERTO Medrano, 30, the
secretary general of the United Unions
Syndidcate, Nicaragua's third largest
union, was gunned down as he was
talking to associates, said Mariano
Menoza, a union secretary.
No one has claimed responsibility for
the death.
The union official recently returned

from the United States, where he met
with AFL-CIO Leaders to plan a U.S.
Longshoreman boycott against
Nicaraguan goods.
MEDRANO was a member of the
broad opposition front, an alliance of
political, business and union leaders
seeking Somoza's resignation through
negotiations mediated by the United
States and an international panel of
diplomats.
Mendoza said five men stopped their
red car at the street corner where
Medrano was standing, blasted him
with their guns and then sped away.
Meanwhile, the opposition front
organized ceremonies to commemorate
the anniversary of the assassination of
publisher Pedro Joaquin Chamorro.,
gunned down on Jan. 10, 1978, on a city
street.
Months of riots and atrikes followed
Chamorro's death, which culminated in
a two-week, guerrilla-led rebellion in
September in which an estimated 1,500
persons were killed.
