A FARN communique did not men- tion the fate of the other three - British bankers Ian Massie and Michael Chat- terton and Japanese businessman Takakazu Suzuki - and there was some optimism here that they might still be alive. THE GUERRILLA group had threatened to kill the captives, who they kidnapped four months ago, unless its demands - including a large ransom, freedom for five political prisoners, and the publication by local news media of its manifesto - were met by Wed- nesday night. . The FARN communique said Mr. Liebes, honorary Israeli consul in El Salvador, was killed Wednesday because Israel had refused to negotiate for his freedom. It said FARN would continue to kidnap businessmen and put ''war criminals'' on trial. The communique accused the Israelis of selling arms to El Salvador, Nicaragua and Guatemala to suppress revolutionary movements in Central America. THE HAGUE (Reuter) - Gunmen killed the British ambassador to the Netherlands and one of his Dutch ser- vants in a bold daylight attack yester- day outside the envoy's residence in the center of The Hague. Police and embassy officials said they had no clues to the identity of the two men who killed Sir Richard Sykes, 58, and 19-year-old embassy footman Karel Straub. But there was immediate speculation that the shooting, described by police as being carried out with professional precision, could have been the work of extremists seeking an end to the British presence in Northern Ireland. SIR RICHARD has been ambassador to Holland since June, 1977. Before his appointment here he was sent by British Prime Minister James Callaghan to report on the July, 1976, bomb murder of the British am- bassador to Ireland, Christopher Ewart-Biggs. The Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA), which has been waging a violent campaign against British rule in Northern Ireland for 10 years, claimed responsibility for that killing on the out- skirts of Dublin. His killers were apparently highly trained professionals. A Hague police spokesman said yesterday only four shots were fired at the ambassador from' a distance of about 10 yards as he got into his Rolls-Royce limousine out- side his residence. One bullet struck him in the head. MAJOR GIFT NEW YORK (AP)-The New York Philharmonic has received a grant of $750,000 from the Charles E. Vice-President Mark "Buckwheat" Norby, TreasurerhTamara Stewart, Secretary Brooke Schumm, and President Al Knauf. Duties for the '79-'80 term began last night when the new officers were sworn in at the Law Club Cook room. Other new officials include Alan Walton and Deryck Palmer on the Board of Governors and Carl Coramy, Jim Williams, Richard Cauley, and Noah Yanich as Senators-at-large. (Continued from Page 7) CHRISTOPHER Walken's Nick is no less superb, epitomizing a kind of sym- bolic American enthusiasm vitiated in- to drug-riddle catatonia by forces ut- terly beyond his control. Newcomer Meryl Streep, though saddled with a stereotyped, stand-by-your-man part, brings Linda to life with a ferocity that leaves no doubt this is a powerhouse ac- tress waiting for the right part. John Savage is perfect as Steven; an emotional adolescent suddenly and horrifyingly initiated into the adult world, and real-life steel worker Chuck Aspergren handles the fun-loving Axel with such natural aplomb that one wishes Cimino had intrusted him with a more versatile vocabulary. But most poignant of all is the late John Cazale as the punky, insecure Stan. A , splendid, overlooked actor, Cazale knew he was dying of cancer when he made Deer Hunter, yet still managed to give one of the best per- formances of his life. Indeed, the entire film radiates a commitment by artists who put everything they had into a work they consumingly believed in. One might wish to proclaim it the Great American Film, yet one is ultimately left with only the agonizing wish that Cimino had possessed a poet's ear to go with his breadth of vision. We are thus forced to accept The Deer Hunter as an erratic, sometimes historic motion picture - but managing even a sporadic immor tality is itself a pretty wondrous achievement. James Mason portrays that suave, ruthless pervert Humbert Humbert, and Sue Lyon is genuinely fresh, sexy and funny as the thirteen- year old nymphet he loves. The Fury (Aud.
