AILING GYMNAST COMPETING IN REGIONALS:
Tumblers' hopes ride with Flom
By ALAN FANGER
Sara Flom is hurt, and that's
disheartening news to a women's gym-
nastics team which faces a "sink or
swim" situation in today's AIAW Mid-
west regional at Morgantown, West
Virginia.
Flom, who captured the individual
all-around crown at the state cham
pionships three weeks back, strainec
some ligaments in her left knee during
Monday's practice. The injury won't
keep her out of competition, but the
Wolverines know that her injury makes
the battle toward the national finals
even rougher.

"I'M UNDER A lot of pain," said the
Westport, Conn. junior. "It's definitely
affected me in practice. I'm just hoping
that it doesn't affect me during the
meet."

Only the regional champion is
assured of a berth in the finals at Penn
State two weeks from now, and the
_ Wolverines are fighting for that single
spot with teams that have defeated
them earlier this season.
Michigan State, for example, has
beaten the Blue tumblers three times
during the campaign-once in a dual
meet, once in the Big Ten meet, and
most recently in the state champion-
ship which the Spartans claimed for fif-
th straight year.
Othergsquads, such as top-seeded
Southern Illinois ".and Indiana State,
come into regionals with a higher team
scoring average. And lessler regarded
Bowling Green and Illinois tripped up
the Wolverines in February.
BUT WHAT troubles Coach Scott
Ponto is the poor seeding his team
received for the competition. The
Wolverines are scheduled to compete in
the second of four sessions. Judges
usually give higher marks in the later
sessions, and Ponto sees his team at a
disadvantage before the meet even
begins.
"I'm very displeased with the
seeding we received," said the first-
year coach. "We beat (Illinois) Chicago
Circle three times this year, but they
were placed in the third session," Ponto
plans to appeal the placement in a pre-
meet caucus.
"I just hope it doesn't hurt us," he
added. "From my experience with
judging in the past, seeding has made a
difference. That is why I'm concerned
that we get seeded fairly."
Although Southern Illinois is seeded
first in the meet, Ponto feels that
Michigan State has the upper hand on

the field. "State beat Southern Illinois
earlier in the year, and they've beaten
the other top teams. But its not going
to be a walkaway."
PONTO THEN sized up his own
squad. "We are certainly capable of
winning it. We just need to get through
all four events." The Wolverines have
had their problems with the uneven
parallel bars this season-their fate at
the state meet was sealed when three
tumblers missed their dismounts from
that apparatus.
Freshman all-arounder Teresa Ber-
toncin agreed. "It's kind of scary to
know that we have a chanceto win it."
You can see it in practice-everybody's
getting tensed up about it. We just have
to hit our routines like we've been hit-
ting themin practice."
