The Michigan women's basketball team barnstor-
med Purdue in the first half yesterday and then held
off a brief Boilermaker surge to win 73-61 at Crisler
Arena.
Michigan opened the game by hitting its first six
shots and did not allow a Purdue bucket in the first
five minutes, while building up a 17-0 lead. Keeping a
torrid shooting pace, the cagers shot 59.0 per cent
from the field, which overpowered Purdue's 24.4 first
half clip.
Purdue could not adjust to the Wolverine defense
and was plagued with tipped passes throughout the
half. Michigan (13-1l) stretched its lead until the
score stood at 48-20 at the half.
yo"Our type of defense is hard to play against if
you've never seen it," said junior guard Terry
Schevers, who broke up numerous Purdue passes and
contributed eleven assists in the contest.
"We have a help-and-recover defense, where we
help out our teammates," she continued. "The way
we shift is hard to adjust to."

"I don't think they played defense very much,"
said Michigan Coach Gloria Soluk, explaining her

squad's dominance of the first half.
Purdue (5-17) managed to stage a comeback in the
second half. Sharpening up' on defense, it was the
Boilermakers' turn to play the pass-stealing game
and slow down the Blue offense.
But the margin was too wide, and the closest Pur-v
due came was within ten points with 2:30 left to play.
"We get fired up and play great," said Soluk. "But.
the team has got to learn to take it to the end."

"We were trying to run the fast break - that was
part of the problem," said Schevers. "We, haven't
really tried to run itlately."
Katie McNamara, who showed some sharp defen-
sive and offensive play, agreed. "The fast break
hasn't been working, and then sometimes when we
need it, we have trouble."
Adding to the Wolverine offensive attack were
Diane Dietz with 20 points, Yvette Harris with ten,
and Schevers with nine.
Harris also contributed 13 boards as Michigan
outrebounded their opponents 51-39.
Freshman Sue Bartz had 18 points to lead the
Boilermakers. Sophomores Debbie Funkhouser and
Sue Fackler tallied 14 and ten, respectively.
The starting time for the cagers' next game has
been changed. Originally slated for 6:00, Saturday's
contest with Oakland University is now scheduled for
12:30 at Crisler.

GRAND RAPIDS (UPI)-Michigan
State University defended its financial
backing for women's athletes yester-
day in a sex discrimination trial testing
the federal mandate for equal treat-
ment of women's and men's athletic
programs.
The MSU women's varsity basketball
team filed suit Feb. 5, charging the
school with discrimination in its meal
nd room allowances for road games.
e suit was based on provisions of
.tle IX of the Education Act of 1972 and
e U.S. Constitution.
THE SUIT SAID MSU gives the
en's team $16 a day for road meals
and only allows women $11, and men
leep two to a motel room while women
leep four to a room.
The women have asked in the trial
hat opened Wednesday for an injun-
ction barring the alleged
discrimination and damages, both
exemplary and compensatory.
MSU ATTORNEY Byron Higgins
ants U.S. District Judge Noel P. Fox
to decide whether Title IX means MSU
would have to provide the same
operating budgets for comparable
pn's and women's teams.
'The men's basketball program
perates on a $120,000 budget, while the
omen's program has a $13,500 budget.
br. Nell Jackson, who has been
assistant athletic director for women's
sports at MSU for six years, testified
thfat in developing her budgets she was
forced to consider whether a given
sport produced any revenue.
