SMITH HITS 22 in 78-67 WIN

Sluggish cagers crawl past 'Cats

By BRIAN MARTIN
Everybody has trouble preparing for
the Northwestern Wildcats, but it
usually doesn't matter.
It didn't matter much to the
Wolverines last night as they played
pretty much how they wanted and
lullabied their way to a 78-67 win.
"I've played Northwestern 19 times
,-now," said Johnny Orr, "won 18, and I
haven't had a team mentally ready for
Northwestern more than once."
Keith Smith discovered his offensive
game through this cloud of apathy and
led all scorers with 22 points, a career
high mark for the freshman guard.
;-Smith broke out after halftime for 15 of
his total with an arsenal of layups and
jumpshots.
MICHIGAN DID have some opening
period trouble with the Wildcats, tking
only a 33-32 lead with them into the
locker room. After the two teams
traded baskets, the Wolverines ram-
bled to an 18-5 scoring tear at the 15:21
mark that lasted for' six and a half
minutes, leaving the final outcome in
little doubt.
Center Phil Hubbard scored eight of
those points during the stretch on his.
way to a 21-point effort.
Hubbard had no trouble maneuvering
inside all evening as ,his overall
quickness left the lead-footed Wildcats
flatfooted repeatedly. The much-taller

RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. (UPI)-
Top-seeded Jimmy Connors routed
former Michigan player Victor Amaya
yesterday, 6-9, 6-4, in the third round of
a $250,000 tennis tournament at Mission
Hills Country Club.
Connors won the first eight sets of the
match before the 6-foot-9 Amaya held
service in the second set.
Amaya, of Holland, Mich., brought
laughter from t ie crowd during the
match when, behind 0-2 in the second
set, he yelled. "Help." Connors replied,
"I'm the only one who can help you
now."
Fourth-seeded Harold Solomon also
advanced the fourth round, defeating
Dick Stockton, 6-2, 6-4, while Eliot Telt-
scher, who upset No. 3 seed John
McEnroe Wednesday, defeated Bob
Lutz, 6-2, 7-6. Bruce Manson, who upset
second-seeded Bjorn Borg Wednesday,
was dusted yesterday by Tom Okker, 6-
4, 5-7, 6-4.

followed by a Hubbard hook inside and
a pair of short Smith jumpers.
TOM STATON added a layup before
Northwestern's Pete Boesen was able to
end a four-minute drought with a jump
shot, but Hubbard reciprocated with
another layup and the door shut again
on the Wildcats.

for more sports.
The surge ended with back-td-back
sensational plays by Alan Hardy. The
senior blocked a twisting layup attempt
by Bill Fenton and fed the ball down-
court to a fast-breaking Smith. Smith
penetrated, then floated the ball back to
a surging Hardy following the play to
ice the action with a flying slam dunk
which brought a lethargic crowd of
12,801 Crisler patrons to its feet.
"The key to the ballgame was
Smith's ability to penetrate and we let
Hubbard inside too much," said a
dejected coach Rich Falk of the Wild-
cats' misfortunes. "They got their run-

ning game going for two to three
minutes, culminating with Hardy's
flying dunk."
Seven foot center Brian Jung led Nor-
thwestern with 18 points, with all but
two coming in the opening stanza. Jung
tired in the second half, having just
come out of a back brace two weeks
earlier.
