KUR T THOMAS LEADS INDIANA STA TE:
'Goath hosts Michigan tumblers

By PETE BARBOUR
Led by co-captains Nigel Rothwell
and Bob Creek, the University of
Michigan men's gymnastics team faces
unquestionably its toughest opponent of
the season when they tangle with In-
diana-State University jit Terre Haute
Saturday.
"Kurt Thomas university," joked
Coach Newt Loken, in referring to the
Sycamores.

The Wolverines have plenty of talen t,
but Loken said that LSU's world class
performer is the best gymnast in the
country. "He's really one hell of an
athlete who's brought a lot of great
publicity to that school. Nigel (all-
around) will try to stay with him. He
has been working arduously in
preparation for this meet."
HOPEFULLY, all the gymnasts have
been working hard, considering that

Indiana State is one of the top five
teams in the nation.
"There's great anticipation for us,
competing against one of the nation's
best gymnasts (Thomas) and teams,"
Loken said.
Loken feels much like David of David
and Goliath, but he promised that the
gymnasts would not lie down against
the highly-rated Sycamores. "It will
give our team a chance to show how

well we can perform. It's really a great
meet to have toward the end of the
season for us," Loken said.
HOW CAN Michigan defeat the
Sycamores? "We'll need a super effort
- no misses, meaning 100 per cent hits.
That is quite a difficult objective in any
meet," Loken said.
He continued, "If we pass them
(ISU), it would be a great stimulus for
us going into the Big Ten champion-
ships."
Physically, the tumblers are in ex-
cellent shape with the one exception of
Ron Tickman, who's hampered by a
heel bruise.

PONTIAC-Jim Brewer was acquired
yesterday by the Detroit Pistons from
the Cleveland Cavaliers in exchange for
undermined future considerations.
A spokesman for the Pistons said the
compensation would not involve a 1979
draft choice. Detroit has three first
round picks in the next draft.
To make room for Cleveland's first-
round 1973 choice on their roster,
Detroit asked waivers on 6-foot-7 for-
ward Essie Hollis, a St. Bonaventure
product who averaged 2.8 points and
played in 25 of the Pistons 38 games sin-
ce joining the team during the
Thanksgiving weekend last year.
The 6-foot-9, 220-pound Brewer, who
will report to Pontiac in time for the
Pistons' game with the Houston
Rockets tonight, averages 4.6 points
and 6.7 rebounds in Cleveland's first 55
games this season.
The former Minnesota star carries
career averages of 7.9 poihts and 7.9
rebounds per game. He had missed only
three games in six years until sitting
out the Cavaliers' most recent game,
presumably because Cleveland was
trying to make a deal for him so it could
activate center Elmore Smith.
Brewer's biggest year was 1975-76,
when he averaged 11.5 points and 10.9
rebounds.
