Carter says he will cooperate with Iran The Michigan Daily-Tuesday, February 13, 1979-Page 5 Bowing to inflation cit cab fares By ELISA ISAACSON Inflation, soaring to near nation- wide highs, has managed to leave its mark on every facet of urban life, most recently, Ann Arbor taxi cab fares. City Council voted at first reading last night to raise cab fares 28 per cent-from 70 cents initially and 10 cents for each ad- ditional one-seventh mile, to an initial fee of $1 and 10 cents for each additional eighth of a mile. A clause in the ordinance provides for a five per cent discount for passengers over 60 years to be effected at specified hours of the day. Councilman David Fisher (R-Fourth Ward) brought up the squestion of offering a discount to han- dicapped passengers as well as to senior citizens. He also suggested the discount to as-much as 10per cent. , COUNCIL MEMBER Susan Green- berg (D-First Ward), chairperson of; the Taxi Cab Board, said the five per cent discount was a step in the right direction, since there has never before been any sort of taxi cab discount at all. She explained the cab owners were probably reluctant to offer a larger cut because they are the ones to loose money. The present policy, Greenberg poin- ted out, is for the, driver and the com- pany to split the fare fifty-fifty. When the discount is implemented the driver will still pocket 50 per cent while the cab owners take the full five per cent cut. Greenberg said, however, that she plans to lobby for a ten per cent benefit for both senior citizens and handicap- ped persons before the ordinance comes back to council for final ap- proval. Councilman Earl Greene (D-Second Ward) expressed concern over the bulk of the cab fare hike. "I'm not sure whether this is within any inflationary guidelines," he said. The council member also said he feels the present football Saturday policy of charging each passenger separately for his or her ride rather than allowing a group of passengers to ride for a single fare is backwards. Greene said he favors a football rush discount which would probably benefit the cab companies in the end since it would encourage taxi cab travel to and from the stadium. Atwater added that those persons who contract complications are usually those who are already sick with another illness. He advised those who come down with the sickness to "give in early and treat it thoroughly. Go to bed, take care of it, and don't try to fight it. There is evidence that suggests that a person who has it, then thinks he's over it and goes back to school, will go into a relap- se and become susceptible to more complications.'
