(AP)-Police Chief James Maples said-yesterday lab tests have confirmed that cocaine was the substance planted on the car of a California sports writer who came here to interview football star Ken Stabler. Maples said a report from state toxicologist Jim Small of Mobile says an analysis "reveals the presence of cocaine" in the powdery substance found Jan. 22. He said an investigation is continuing and there have been no arrests. THE REPORT from the toxicologist did not say how much cocaine was in- volved. Earlier police reports said there was "about an ounce" of a powdery substance in the packet found on the car of Sacramento Bee sports writer Bob Padecky. Police arrested Padecky after finding the substance but a short time later dropped any charges. Maples said it was determined that the cocaine ap-, parently had been planted on Padecky's car in an attempted frame- up. Stabler, the quarterback for the Oakland Raiders, said he knew nothing about the apparent frame-up and that the episode was embarrassing to him. Padecky's arrest occurred as the sports writer left one Gulf Shores lounge to resume the interview with Stabler at another location. Police said the sports writer's car was stopped and the arrest was made because the police department had received two anonymous telephone tips saying cocaine was on the car. Last season Tech whipped the Wolverines all five times, four in the WCHA regular season and once in the Great Lakes Tournament. It is an event the Huskies virtually own, having won it three of the last four years. Farrell scoffed at the idea of a jinx, instead attributing the last five losses to Tech's superb sophomore goaltender John Rockwell. "The difference has been the goaltending,'' explained Farrell. "I thought we outplayed them the last five time but that guy (Rock- well) has just shut the door on us. "I don't think he gave us one rebound when we played them earlier in the year. He's definitely one of the best goalies in our league." Michigan Tech coach John MacInnes concurred. "I'd have to agree with Dan on that," he said. "I thought it was a super series for both teams when we played down there and no doubt about it, we wouldn't have won both games if it wasn't for Rockwell."
