TOP RANKED MINNESOTA NEXT: Icers suffer the tourney blues The Michigan Daily-Friday, January 5, 1979-Page By BOB EMORY Where to begin? There's so much to tell about the Michigan hockey team now that we've all returned from the four winds and resettled in Ann Arbor. Unfortunately, most of the news is pretty bad. JUST BEFORE the vacation started, the Wolverines skated to a two-game sweep over Michigan State. The victories raised their WCHA record to 5-9 and brought them out of the league cellar, a position now held solely by the Spartans. And then came trouble: The Great Lakes Invitational, that annual four-team get-together at Olympia Stadium in Detroit. For the past two seasons, Michigan has lost in the finals to Michigan Tech, but this year they didn't even get that far as Ohio State nipped them 5-4 in the opening round. That's right, Ohio State. The same Central Collegiate Hockey Association team which has never come close to beating the Wolverines in four previous attempts. But now, the buckeyes become the first team ever from the CCHA to beat Michigan in a hockey game. The Wolverines had won 16 games in a row over CCHA opponents before the Buckeye defeat. MEANWHILE, Michigan Tech was busy upsetting Boston University in the other opening round game. The Terrapins were undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the nation before their 6-4 loss to the Huskies. Tech went on and easily handled Ohio State in the finals to win the holiday tournament for the third consecutive year and seventh time since its beginning in 1965. As for the consolation game, it was no game. BU crushed the Wolverines 8-2 and Michigan went home empty-handed. And now, WCHA action prepares to rev up again and the Wolverines must take on the No. 1 team in the land, Minnesota, in a weekend series tonight and tomorrow at Yost Arena. THE GOPHERS swept Michigan for two in Minneapolis last month and, quite frankly, it will take a super effort from the Wolverines to prevent a similar performance. "Minnesota is a team with great experience," said head coach Dan Farrell." I doubt if they have more than one freshman in the lineup, and that's quite an advantage." There is some good news for Michigan. High- scoring center Dan Lerg made his return against Ohio State and is expected back in the lineup against Minnesota; that alone should bolster the almost non- existent Michigan offense. The Wolverines are last in goals scored in the WCHA.
