JOHNSON OUT AT LEAST 2 WEEKS: The Michigan Daily-Wednesday, January 17, 1979-Page 9 No one seems to. covet the top spot as several of the top teams toppled again last week. Michigan State was perched atop the country, only to be upended by Illinois, and then Illinois was stunned by Ohio State. This all boils down to the fact that Notre Dame has played less games than other top teams, so they have lost less and are now number one. Smith's eligibility decided today AP Top Twenty By GEOFF LARCOM Johnny Orr and his assistant Bill Frieder are still waiting. And worrying. THE QUESTION of freshman guard Keith Smith's eligibility failed to be resolved yesterday, as the Michigan eligibility committee rescheduled his hearing for one o'clock this afternoon. At that time, Smith will petition the board to permit him to resume play with the Wolverines. Smith had originally been forced to sit out last weekend's losses to Purdue and Wisconsin, due to an incomplete he received in one of his classes. He has since turned in the required coursework, and it is now up to the board to determine Smith's basketball future for the remainder of the season. Orr describes himself as "hopeful" for Smith's chances, while Frieder is optimistic. "But the way everything's been going, I don't know," said Frieder. THE "EVERYTHING" Frieder spoke of refers to the Wolverines' dismal 1-3 start in the Big Ten, along with the loss of sophomore guard Johnny Johnson for at least two weeks. The backcourt sharpshooter injured his knee in the first half of the Wisconsin game and was diagnosed as having a sprained knee yesterday by Blue head trainer Lindsay McLean. The temporary loss of Johnson accentuates the Wolverines' need for Smith, who appeared to be developing in the role of playmaking guard Orr had envisioned for him in the preseason. IF SMITH is ruled eligible, he would join his mates in Evanston, where the 1-3 Wolverines battle last- place Northwestern tomorrow night. If the commit- tee rules against Smith, as Orr said, "that's it for the season for Keith." As of last night, Orr was still unsure whether his team would fly or travel by bus to meet the Wildcats, due to the blizzard snow conditions in Chicago. "If we have to go by bus, Keith will practice in Crisler with us and then ride out to Evanston. If we're able to fly, Keith will take another plane and meet us there," said Orr. IN AN ATTEMPT to inject some fire into the recen- tly dormant Wolverine offense, Orr plans on starting a revamped lineup against the Wildcats. Paul Heuerman will start at center, with Mike McGee and Phil Hubbard at forward. Should Smith make the trip, he would start at guard along with Marty Bodnar. Otherwise, junior Mark Lozier will man the second guard spot. Smith expressed confidence when asked about his chances of staying with the team. The Blue speedster was second in assists for Michigan prior to his sitting out last weekend's road trip. 1. Notre Dame (46) 2, North Carolina (3) 3. UCLA 4. Illinois (5) 5. The Pistons led 69-51 with 9:52 to go in the third quarter before New York began its amazing comeback. The Knicks climbed back into contention by outscoring Detroit 20-4 in 4:41, with Knight getting eight points and Ray Williams handing out four assists as New York closed the deficit to 73- 71 with 4:25 remaining in the third period. e Knicks pulled to within one point at 100-99 on a short jun per by Knight with 3:12 remaining, but Detroit seemingly clinched the victory by scoring the next five points, three of them by center Bob Lanier, to lead 105-99 with 1:48 to go. But the Knicks did not give up. Two baskets apiece by Bob McAdoo and Joe Meriwether closed the gap to 109-107 with 15 seconds to play. Leon Douglas sank one free throw for Detroit with 12 seconds left, but Meriwether made it 110-109 with a follow-up shot with five seconds to play. After Detroit called a timeout to move the ball to midcourt, Knight stole the inbounds by M. L. Carr and drove in for the winning dunk. Another 'Black Sunday?' MIAMI - Not taking any chance of Super Bowl Sunday becoming a "Black Sunday," Miami police have assembled an anti-terrorist strike force that is undergoing disaster prevention training and will closely monitor the crowd at the professional football championship game. Authorities are keenly aware of the heavy promotion CBS television is giving the movie, "Black Sunday", which will air shortly after the game this weekend. In the film, a group of terrorists hijack the Miami-based Goodyear blimp for a suicide mission at the Orange Bowl on Super Bowl Sunday. Miami police say they will be keeping an eye on the blimp at Opalocka airport this Sunday. While police say they have received no indications of pending Super Bowl terrorism, "The threat is there; you have the potential," said Capt. Mike Cosgrove, who will coordinate the strike force. "The whole point of terrorism is publicity. A disruption of the Super Bowl would be a big plus for any of those terrorist groups.'' Banks to stay DURHAM, N.C. - Duke basketball forward Gene Banks yesterday denied reports that he will turn professional next year. Banks' statement was released by the Duke University Sports Information Office. A spokesman for the office said published and broadcast reports in Philadelphia, Banks' hometown, speculated that Banks would go hardship in the pro draft next year. "Right now, I plan on staying at Duke four years," Banks saidin the statement. "I have enjoyed my college experience and want to enjoy more of it. Up to now, I do not feel I have played up to the par of a professional player." Banks said he believes he will be worth more to a pro team after he graduates. "I still hope to fulfill certain dreams that I have of playing in the 1980 Olympics and also of being the first black player in the Duke Hall of Fame," Banks said. -------------------mm-m Cottage INN.
