over a profit," said Gordon.
He said Xerox sent him a letter/in Oc-
tober stating that even though he owed
the firm a good deal of money, cor-
poration officials would continue to
work with him because they believe his
business has potential. Gordon also
received letters from International
Calculators Inc. and AM Multigraphics,
two copy service firms doing business
with Gordon, expressing that Paper
Chase has the potential to become a
viable business.
Gordon started his business last
January with a $1,500 grant from the
Michigan Dept. of Education Bureau of
Rehabilitation. Since that time,
however, he has become indebted to
Xerox for $20,000, I.B.M. for $12,000 and
an additional $38,000 to other loan
associations, copy service firms, and
utility companies. Paper Chase leases
space from the Michigan Union.
THIS PAST year has been really
bad," said Gordon. "I've received little
cooperation from the businesses I have
been dealing with."
He complained that Xerox Cort
poration brought in a copy machine,
that rents for $2,000 a month, three
months after he originally requested it.
"I asked for it in January, and they
brought it in April, right when school
was getting ouft," added Gordon. He
said the summer was the slowest time
of the year and he lost most of the
money then.
GORDON SAID his business is also
being hurt by competition from Univer-
-sity-owned copy machines and from
other local copy businesses. "ill
Slack, the owner of Dollar Bill, asked
me if I was interested in renting my
space to him," said Gordon. "I told him
there was no way I was going to rent the
space out, in fact, I even hired one of his
(Slack's) employees to work for me."
He added that the only way he would
'rent out the Paper Chase would be if he
was unable to run his business
properly.
Slack said he understood the Paper
Chase was ailing financially, but
refused to comment on whether he had
offered to rent the location.
