Ilinois 43 IOWA CITY - Steve Krafcisin scored 15 points and five other Iowa players hit double figures as the Hawkeyes cruised past Northern Illinois 86-43 yesterday in a college basketball opener. Iowa struggled early against Nor- thern Illinois' zone defense, but began pulling away late in the second half and was never threatened in the final period. The Hawkeyes held the Huskies to only six field goals in each half. Freshman Bob Hansen added 14 poin- ts for Iowa, which was tri-champion of the Big Ten Conference last season. Kenny Arnold scored 13 points,; Ronnie Lester had 12 and Kevin Boyle and Vin- ce Brookins each contributed 10. Allen Rayhorn led Northern Illinois with nine points, eight in the first half. Northern Illinois, which committed 27 turnovers, had the nation's longest major college winning streak coming into the contest at six games. Northern Illinois took a 4-0 lead, but Iowa came back with 12 straight points, including eight by Lester in a span of less than three minutes. Iowa continued to have problems with its offense, however, and led only 20-15 with six and a half minutes left in the half before opening a 36-23 lead at halftime. The Hawkeyes charged to a 32-24 lead in the first five minutes of the second half and reserves played most of the final 10 minutes for Iowa. 10th Annual U-M SKI TEAM SKI SWAP DEC. 7: TO SELL DEC. 8: TO BUY DEC. 9: TO PICK UP At U-M Coliseum (corner'of S. Fifth & Hill) Pistons, 'Hub' shine in win over Spurs L dmp r By BUDDY MOOREHOUSE Special to the Daily PONTIAC -The Detroit Pistons en-" ded a four-game losing streak before 7,466 fans at the Silverdome last night, as they came on strong at the end to defeat the San Antonio Spurs handily, by a 134-124 margin. San Antonio led throughout most of the tight contest, until the Pistons took the lead for good with 4:47 left in the fourth quarter. PART OF San Antonio's troubles could be attributed to the fact that the iceman did not cometh. Detroit native George Gervin missed the game because of a back injury. His absence caused Spurs coach Doug Moe to remark, "We played pretty well tonight, but you can never tell what might have happened with Gervin in." Detroit only had eight players dressed to play, as Greg Kelser, James McElroy, and Leon Douglas were idelined with injuries. Te reduced roster gave some of the bench warmers a good, chance to garner some playing time. Most notable of these was former Michigan center Phil Hubbard, who had 17 points and seven rebounds. Hub- bard's performance prompted Coach Richue Adubato to remark, "Hubbard did a heckuva job. Sometimes you discover a player when injuries allow a guy an opportunity to play." The Pistons were paced in scoring and rebounding by forward Bob McAdoo, who poured in 29 points and grabbed 12 boards. Terry Tyler also had a good night, as he scored a per- sonal season high of 25 points in ad- dition to some clutch rebounding at the end of the game. Center Bob Lanier ad- ded 26 to the effort. The Spurs' loss wasted fine perfor- mances by Larry Kenon, who had a game high 39 points, and James Silas, who added 34. The much-needed victory raises the Pistons' season mark to 8-16, while San Antonio dropped to 13-11.
