(Continued from Page 2)
defensive rebounding in order to start
the fast break, they're forced to play
more conservatively than in the past
which featured a fast-breaking offense.
"WE'RE WEAK defensively and
we're weak on the boards," said Orr.
"We've got to have super efforts from
everybody, particularly in rebounding.
We can't release anybody like we have
been doing in the past. We've got to
keep 'em all right in there.
"That's certainly gonna cut down on
the break," Orr continued. "We're gon-
na have to pick up the break on our
defense. We will pick it up with our full-
court press, interceptions and
quickness. That's where we'll
break-on the turnovers more than on
rebounding and out."
Frieder adds that the Wolverines
have "spent a lot of time on defense. We
really work a lot on that, we have to.
"We can't let teams score at will on
us if we're gonna have a successful
team," concluded the assistant coach.
REGARDLESS OF how hard the
Wolverines work, most basketball ex-
perts feel Michigan will slip from last
year's sixth place Big Ten finish.
The most respected basketball
magazines, in fact, predict a '7th, 8th or
9th place Wolverine finish, while some
even rate Michigan as low as tenth.
Of course a seventh or eighth place
finish in the Big Ten does not
necessarily mean a lousy team. The Big
Ten war
Ten just happens to be the toughest con-
ference in the nation. Some of the teams
which finished in the second division of
the Big Ten season last year probably
could have wori a conference crown
elsewhere.
Wisconsin, for example, finished nin-
th in the Big Ten last year with a 6-12
conference record yet beat both Ohio
State (19-12) and NCAA champion
Michigan State (26-6) during the last
week of the season. The Badgers also
knocked off 10th-ranked Marquette
(22-7) earlier in the season.
SIMILARLY, MICHIGAN, 8-10 in the
Big Ten and 15-12 overall, upset nine
teams which eventually went to the NIT
or NCAA tournament. The Wolverines
conquered eventual NIT champion In-
diana (22-12), Michigan State, and four-
th-ranked Notre Dame (24-6) in their
season finale at the Pontiac Silver-
dome.
"We're gonna be better than most
people think," said Orr. "We've had
great pride in our basketball at
Michigan in the last seven-eight
years."
"If we can get through the non-
conference season and win 6, 7 or 8
games, that'll give us some confidence
for the league and we might be pretty
competitive there."
"But if we struggle early in the
season," Frieder concluded, "that's an
indication that we're gonna struggle
during the Big Ten season."
