OFFENSE PROVIDES SPARK

"Help! I need somebody. Help! Not just anybody."
That's what the Beatles said, and the Michigan defense is
probably saying the same thing. What the Wolverines will
need in their regular season finale Saturday is a* tremendous
defensive effort against an Ohio State offense which is as
potent as any in the country.
Last year the Buckeyes won only seven of twelve games.
Since six starters on offense had graduated., prospects for a
successful season under Earle Bruce did not look too
favorable.
HOWEVER, WITH A 10-0 record and a number-two
ranking in the Associated Press poll, Bruce has succeeded in
his mission to restore the team to its former prominence.
Sophomore quarterback Art Schlichter's improvement is a
primary reason why the team is better.
And while this year's team is scoring at a high rate (37.6
points per game), they are doing something atypical of past
Buckeye teams: attempting to achieve balance between run-
ning and passing.
Schlichter has helped reduce Ohio State's ratio of rushing
to passing yardage to 'about 2:1. In conference games
Schlichter has completed 50 per cent of his passes for 850
yards and eight touchdowns. More significantly, only three of
Schlichter's 106 passes have been intercepted.
THAT IS QUITE an improvement from last year when he
threw 21. His last picked-off pass put Clemson's Charlie
Baumann into the sports trivia Hall of Fame as the knockee
in Woody Hayes last and most memorable knockout.
Schlichter's favorite target this season has been junior
Doug Donley. Donley gives the Buckeyes a deep threat,
another dimension which is new to them and most of their
opponents.l

I'Bucking
Washington State found 'that out- earlier in the season,:
when Schlichter and Donley connected on an 89-yard touch-,
down pass against the Cougars. In conference play, the
speedy wide receiver has caught 22 passes for over 400 yards..,
SO IF THE Wolverines can stop the Schlichter-Donleyt
connection, they will' be eliminating nearly half of Ohio{
State's passing game. Unfortunately for Michigan, the'
Buckeyes are strong in other areas, including those where
they were expected to be weak.
Having lost four starters to graduation, OSU's offensive
line figured to be shaky at best. That has not proved to be the
outcome.
Led by senior right guard Ken Fritz (All-Big Ten last'
year), the offenisive line play probably has had a great deal to
do with the reduction in interceptions thrown by Schlichter.;
The performance of the line hasn't hurt the running game,
either.
IN CONFERENCE PLAY, OSU's rushing attack has ac-
counted for 271.1 yards per game and 21 touchdowns. It's in-
teresting to note that although Ohio State has fumbled 20
times in their seven conference games, they have only lost;
five of them.
Junior tailback Cal Murray leads the Buckeye runners
with 68.9 yards per game. Anyone who saw the OSU-Illinois
game most likely recalls Murray picking up an errant pit-
chout from Schlichter on the Illini 15, turning potential
disaster into a touchdown.
Schlichter's talents are not limited to passing, as he has
run for over 400 yards through ten games. At the fullback
position, senior Ric Volley provides the Buckeyds with a
powerful inside running game (53.9 yards a game) which Will
prevent the Michigan defense from keying on the option.
