But more importantly, they are the three conference road trips Michigan hockey coach Dan Farrell must take his young squad on during the first half of its '79 schedule. They're important because road trips can make or break a college hockey team, especially like Michigan, where freshmen are playing a major role in the team's success. "You always hope for a split on the road. If you split all your road games and win all. your home games, you're gonna win a lot of games," said Farrell. WHAT MAKES it so difficult to win on the road? There are many reasons. The team is in a strange -town, the squad must play in an ice arena it's not familiar with, and most threatening of all, it must face the opposing. team's fans. , But for the freshmen Canadian trio of Paul Fricker, Bruno Baseotto, and Brad Tippett, it was hardly a new ex- perience. "All three of us came from good junior hockey clubs that played, just as many road games as we play here all year," said Prince Albert native Tippjett. THE FANS ARE a diferent story, though. "We aren't used to this type of hockey fan. The fans where we come from are English soccer-type fans. They're serious about their hockey," said Tippett. "Those 4,guys (the American fans) have Jln at their hockey games," explained netminder 'Fricker. "If you let them affect you, you're dead." In the second period Friday night Fricker followed his philosophy by keeping his cool as ovr 3,000 Fighting Irish fans yelled "sieve, sieve, sieve," as the Irish poured four unanswered goals past him'. "THE ONLY THING. I've heard is that the Wisconsin and .North Dakota Brad Tip pfett 7 Solutions To YourProle Usethese numbers to call the MichiganDaily fans' are M~ealy hard on goo tenders. If 'they throw sieves, I'll throw the sieves right back at them," said Fricker. THE FRESHMAN trio seems quite' confident at this point in the season, and' after; Friday night's 1-4. come-from.: behind victory, how could anyone argue with them?z "When you)come from behind on the road, you're{ either, lucky or you're~ bloodygoo, " added Tippett. -. Anoter apectthat is different this season for the youngsters is their level, of concentration.. "I used to look for au- good lookin', woman in section 35, but you can't do, that anymore, you-have to. concentrate all the time," said Fricker.N; Tippett said it all though in':: describing whether or not this Michigan team is for real : "I. guess, we'll fin~d ouw next week,"""he said, 'referring to when'. they travel t~o Madison to take--on the '6 Badgers in the second straight road test of the young'WCHA season.; 1, ARE YOU LETTING CLASSES GET TO YOU? r .I eI w "'AX'A Take a IatI break , ..you deserve id!
