The undefeated Buckeyes ran their overall record to 10-0 and can clinch a Rose Bowl berth next week by winning at Michigan. THE BUCKEYE defense was so dominating that Iowa did not manage a first down until 12:55 remained in the third quarter. The Hawkeyes did not cross midfield until fullback Dennis Mosley, the Big Ten's leading ground- gainer, ran 15 yards to the Buckeyes' 46-yard line early in the third period. Marcus Marek, a linebacker, inter- cepted two passes and recovered one fumble as Ohio State had the issue set- tIed by halftime as the Buckeyes took a 27-0 lead. Sophomore quarterback Art Schlichter ran one yard for a touch- down and passed 34 yards to Doug Donley for another score. Scouts from the Cotton and Gator bowls watched the game -as well as 87,833 fans, marking the 70th con- secutive sellout in Ohio Stadium. Indiana 45, Illinois 14 CHAMPAIGN - Quarterback Tim Clifford passed for three touchdowns and ran for a fourth as Indiana enhan- ced its bowl prospects by overwhelming Illinois 45-14 in Big Ten football yester- day. The victory boosted the Hoosiers' season record to 7-3 and their conferen- pe mark to 5-2. Representatives of the ,Garden State, Peach, and Sun Bowls were at the game. ,CLIFFORD THREW two touchdown passes to Bob Stephenson and one to Nate Lundy. The junior quarterback completed 14 of 19 passes for 241 yards to establish new Indiana passing recor- ds. Lonnie Johnson and Al Darring also ran for Indiana touchdowns, and Mark Sutor booted a 34-yard field goal. v Conference Quarterback Lawrence McCullough turned over the ball four times in the first half. He fumbled once and Indiana cornerback Tim Wilbur intercepted three of his passes to set a school career interception record of 12. MSU 31, Minnesota 17 EAST LANSING - Tailback Derek Hughes stormed for four touchdowns - the third a 70-yard game-breaker - as Michigan State repulsed a second-half Minnesota comeback yesterday to down the Gophers 31-17. Hughes raced for 213 yards in 31 carries to spark Michigan State's ground attack. The Spartans did not complete a pass. MICHIGAN STATE got its ground game clicking to move 63 yards to paydirt early in the second quarter. Hughes dived over from the one to give the Spartans the lead. Minnesota cut the lead to 7-3, mainly on Carlson's arm. He hit split end Elmer Bailey for 16 yards, then lofted another to flanker Jeff Anhorn for 36 yards to set up a 23-yard field goal by Paul Rogind. Minnesota, meanwhile, sputtered on the ground and only quarterback Mark Carlson's league-leading passing kept the Gophers in the game. Wisconsin 28, N'western 3 MADISON - Mike Kalasmiki passed for 265 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score, leading Wiscon- sin to a 28-3 Big Ten college football vic- tory over Northwestern yesterday. KALASMIKI, sidelined for four games this year 'with a broken right thumb, completed 17 of 23 passes for the Badgers, 2-5 in the Big Ten and 3-7 for the season. Northwestern, down 14-0 at the half, scored on a 26-yard field goal by Sam Poulos with 4:22 left in the third quar- ter. However, the Badgers converted two Northwestern turnovers into fourth quarter touchdowns on a one-yard run by Gerald Green and a 30-yard pass from Kalasmiki to Tom Stauss. But then the Trojans stiffened. On a second-down and one-yard situation, Huskie tailback Vince Coby was thrown for a one-yard loss. Coby then was thrown for a three-yard loss. On a fourth and five situation, Flick completed a pass to Coby but he was stopped for a five-yard loss and the Trojans took over the ball with 3:11 to play. Tenn. 40, Notre Dame 18 KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Second team fullback Hubert Simpson rushed for 117 yards and scored four touchdowns to lead Tennessee to a 40-8 college foot- ball upset yesterday over 13th-ranked Notre Dame. Simpson ran touchdowns of 24, one and one yards to spark a 23-point scoring blitz in the second quarter, giving the host Volunteers a 30-12 half- time lead. Halfback Vegas Ferguson scored all three Notre Dame touchdowns on runs of one and two yards in the first half and one yard in the final quarter. But Tennessee's defense held Ferguson, the nation's fourth leading rusher with an average of five yards each carry, to 89 yards in 22 carries. The victory was a strong comeback for the Volunteers, 5-3, who suffered a 13-7 upset loss to Rutgers a week ago. Notre Dame, which a year ago came from behind to beat Tennessee 31-14 in its first game ever against the Vols, fell to 6-3. Syracuse 30, Navy 14 ANNAPOLIS - Syracuse quarter- back Bill Hurley ran for one touchdown, passed for another and guided the Orangemen to a 30-14 victory over Navy yesterday. Hurley, who replaced Ernie Davis as the third leading rusher in Syracuse history, moved his team 51 yards in just four plays for the first score late in the opening quarter. Early in the second period, the senior quarterback carried the ball over from the four-yard line for a touchdown which he set up with a 65-yard pass to Art Monk. Three field goals by Gary Anderson and a six-yaf'd scoring run by Joe Morris accounted for the rest of Syracuse's 30 points, the most given up by Navy in nine games this year. The victory gave Syracuse a 6-4 season mark. Navy's record now is 6-3. Navy QB Bob Powers completed a fourth-down nine-yard scoring toss to tight end Dave Dent in third period, and fourth-string tailback Ed Meyers ran for 12 yards for the other Navy touch- down.
