Representatives of Exxon, Mobil, Texaco, and Shell declined comment on the move by Standard Oil of California (Chevron) to decrease the price of diesel fuel, gasoline, and heating oil, saying only that their companies had not changed prices. THE SPOKESPERSONS also said their companies do not speculate on future price changes. Several noted the Justice Department has complained that such speculation amounts to anti- competitive "signaling" of prices bet- ween companies. They also noted that companies don't necessarily face the same costs in sup- plying buyers with products, and costs can vary by region.' "The prices we are paying for crude oil continue to escalate," said Michael Thomson, a spokesman for Standard Oil Co. of Indiana. "Chevron's actions were the result of a set of circumstan- ces unique to that company." Chevron said the new prices "result price-cut from a moderating trend in Chevron's costs, brought about by its ability to supply its customers with more produc- ts processed in its own refineries." As a result, Chevron, the nation's seventh-largest gasoline seller, said it "has been able. to reduce purchases of costly supplies of finished products it formerly had to buy on the spot market." _a 1. i 'U' seeks to have Marwil federal suit dismissed (Continued from Page i) University's financial resources. JUDGE PRATT could decide whether or not to dismiss the case, or he could reserve his decision awariting more evidence concerning the Univer- sity's relationship with the state. Even if the monetary claims against the, Regents and engineering professors as University officials are dismissed, the suit may still proceed against the defendants as individuals. "The question this court is con- sidering is a question of some moment for the University and state agencies," University attorney Robert Vercruysee told Judge Pratt. A similar question was almost ad- dressed in a 1974 suit against the University. In that suit, as in the Mar- wil case, the University moved to dismiss the claims for monetary damages against the University based on elevepth amendment restrictions. Tho judge decided to hold a hearing to determine whether the University is an agency of the state of Michigan, but the plaintiffs withdrew their case before that hearing could be held. Vercruysee said in his brief, ho ever, that "the Michigan courts ha e consistently ruled that the Unversity of Michigan is a state in- strpmentality and fourth branch of the State government." frMarwil, who has been off of the University payroll since June, had been Oa the engineering humanities faculty tEr six years; -tenure reviews are rdutinely granted for faculty members who have been here that long.
