A By ADRIENNE LYONS After winter term students head home in April, Ann Arbor is generally a quiet town through the early summer months. But the evolution begins in the middle of July: flimsy wooden struc- tures are erected in the middle of streets, artists-some great, most mediocre, and some really bad-ft- up shop, and hordes of people arrive to peruse the offerings. The event, of course, is the famous Ann Arbor Art Fair, which attracts Plenty fn in f a ]Q'w"S in Hordes invade in July for four-day event the Mayor's Art Fair Committee, said Guild Director Celeste Melis. "The city is very supportive," Melis said. "The University is very cooperative, too." In addition to the paintings, pottery, and other assorted works, the fair provides the visitors with entertain- ment. Artists' demonstrations abound while diversions for children are com- monplace. Diversions are also provided on the Graceful Arch, a stage construe- ted by architecture students in front of the Physics and Astronomy Building. Actually, the fair is not a single fair, but rather a conglomeration of three separate events-sponsored by three organizations and held simultaneously at locations throughout the city. THE ARTISTS and Craftsmen Guild, which has participated in the event for. nine years, locates its portion of the fair both on East University Street on cam- pus and on Main Street downtown. The Ann Arbor Street Art Fair is located each July on East and South University streets. A fair participant since 1960, the Ann Arbor Street Art Fair features both professional artists and student artists. The third organization is the State Street Area Association, which locates its artists on South State, Maynard, and East Liberty Streets. Involved in the art fair for 11 years, the group is spon- sored by the State Street Area Mer- chants. The fair is organized each year by the above three groups in conjunction with 2 area -t s ('01t inUed ti'om Pitge 4) some time getting there, as well, if you're without a car). There are four theaters, all of them clean and quite pleasant since they stopped flashing that nauseating light-blue-and-pink kaleidoscope artwork on the screens between showings. (Now, they have ads for Bulova watches.) The best thing about Briarwood is the discounts. Their shows run all day, from 10:30 a.m. to midnight, and all showings before 1:30 in the afternoon Cost a mere $1.50. (Regular price is $2.50 with a student ID.) The mall is also continuing last year's successful "experiment: midnight shows. Taking its cue from the blossoming craze for cult films, Briarwood started having weekend midnighters of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and it turned out that the mall audiences threw more riee and toast, sprayed more rain, and yelled "Asshole! !" at Barry Bostwick more fervently than even the crowds on capipus. Since then, Briarwood has kepts on Rocky Horro, and added regu- lar screenings of other cult items and the current releases it shows during the daytime hours. Beware of only one thing: the crowds. These theaters aren't large, and have an annoying habit of selling out just as you approach the ticket counter. ~hi E~id43 at I is preserved on 0K'Mmrn onnn IIV1UMf1~~ltm Open 8 a.m.-2 a.m. Sunday 11 a.m.-12 p.m. Located on U of M campy 338 S.
