EVERYTHING YOU NEVER EXPECTED FROM AN APPLIANCE STORE! Roadside litter cut 41% by bottle bill LANSING (UPI) - State spot checks found a 41 per cent reduction in overall roadside litter this year under Michigan's new bottle law, Department of Transportation (DOT) officials said yesterday. A DOT study also found a nearly 82 per cent decrease in the number of discarded beverage containers found along state highways. THE STUDY, covering selected areas on state trunklines, found a significant portion of the beverage con- tainers found this year were throwaways brought in from other states. The decline contrasted sharply with steep increase in litter recorded in 1978. Michigan's voter-approved bottle law, which took effect last December, requires deposits of five cents or ten cents on all beer and soft drink con- tainers. THE MEASURE had strong backing from environmental groups that said it would greatly reduce litter and en- courage ecologically sound recycling.. Similar measures are being con- sidered in other states and the effec- tiveness of Michigan's deposit requirement is expected to be a key issue in those votes. Gov.
