HEYFANS!
This will rea
MASH! CRASH! Hey, what's the noise? Not to
a worry, it's just the famous and beautiful people,
falling on their faces and making all sorts of news.
Last week it was Elton John passing out in mid-
concert, and this week we've got Della Deese and
Jimmy "The Greek" Snyder going headfirst into the
dust for our collective amusement.
Reese, the very fine singer, collapsed during a taping
of Johnny Carson's Tonight Show. How collapsed was

BELIEVE IT OR NOT, the oldest living man was

age 137, lost his title at Lakeland General Hospital
in Florida, officials announced Saturday.

she? Well, completely. She fainted while singing and
was taken to a nearby hospital for care.
In the meantime, feted oddsmaker Jimmy The
Greek was in Durham, North lCarolina, falling off a
moped. They don't make cultural heros like they used,
to, that's for sure. Greek was filming a television
feature on losing weight at the time of his tumble, and
was rushed to the Duke Medical Center in Durham for
treatment. Blood loss is a great way to shed pounds,
but messy and expensive: Snyder is in good condition
but "very uncomfortable" due to injuries sustained,
say doctors.
The odds are very good he'll pull through.

ENLIGHTENED SOUTHERNER Anita Bryant here
sings for pan NBC teeveespecial called "The Sensa-
tional, Shocking, Wild and Crazy Seventies," to be
aired in January, 1980. Bryant, the celebrated homo-
phobe, appears along with such other symbols of our
era as Lief Garret (would that he were dead) and
Sonny Bono. This marks Bryant's first network ap-
pearance in more than three years. In related where-
are-they-now-those-orange-juice-hucksters? news, Bing
Crosby has been dead two years this coming Sunday.
Where does the time go?

BOVINE Dolly Parton, country music singer, did not win any awards the
other night at the Country Music Association awards show. Well, that's not the
half of it: Soon, Dolly will have to undergo bust reduction surgery because of
posture problems. How do we know? Well, Mickie Dahne has predicted it.
Mickie is one of the six psychic experts consulted by the National Enquirer this
week, and the National Enquirer boasts that it is the most accurate newspaper
in the country. Be among the first to send get-well cards to slumping Dolly.
PRAISE THE LORD! Born-again Bob Dylan will appear on Saturday
Night Live on October 20. His appearances on teevee are as rare as Anita
Bryant's. Hey, Anita! Hey Bob! Hey! Hey!
HE'S YOUNG, BUT HE'S DONE A LOT. Crazy John Rideout has
been given a nine month suspended jail sentence and fined $15 to pay for his ex-
wife's front door. Remember the Rideouts? They married. He allegedly raped
her. She brought him to trial. He was aquitted. They reconciled. They got divor-
ced. August 27, he broke into her apartment. Ruined the door. Only 22 years old,
John Rideout. Many good years left.

Talese and Haley: Honor Thy Roots

ND SPEAKING OF GAYS, author Gay Talese
L has made the garbage news this week. The author
of Honor Thy Father signed for $2.5 million for the film
rights to Thy Neighbor's Wife, a non-fiction book about
sex in Ameica. That's ;2.5 million no-nonsense dollars,
mind you! No wonder everybody wants to be a writer
these days. What is more, as research-research, we
say-Talese managed two New York massage parlors
and lived in a free-sex colony.
A LITTLE NEWS of Alex Haley goes a long way, of
course, but he keeps reappearing just as we think

we've heard the last from him. This week, Roots
author Haley obtained the deed to the two story house
in Henning, Tenn., where he grew up. It was on the
very porch of this house that little Alex heard his
grandmother's, stories from the past. These tales
spurred him to write his best-seller, and the rest of the
story you know.
The house, damaged by fire two years ago, sits on
Haley avenue. "I'm going to have it restored and make
a kind of museum out of it," quoth Haley.
A legend in his time, that man.

P SSSSST! WAKE UP! It's been a long week with
nothing but pope-gossip to keep the parties
lively, hasn't it? The same old story on contraception,
abortion, and lady-priests, plus masses everywhere,
and, well, John Paul II (right) can hardly be blamed R
for spending a few moments in the arms of Morpheus.
He had to sit through the whole tour, remember. It's
not like we want to publish all
these pope-fax: This is a newspaper
and it is our duty under the con-
stitution to keep the people of this
free country informed. If you don't
like it, write to the government and
complain.

HUSBANDS
Starring BEN GAZZARA, PETER FALK and JOHN CASSAVETES as three middle-
class, middle-aged men are traumatized by the premature death of a fourth
friend. A traditional bacchanal wake turns into a desperate flight into renewed
romantic revelations and inevitable individual choices for each. 'Cassavetes'
precarious position midway between Hollywood and the- American under-
ground is fully vindicated by a film that combines the best of both worlds."

THOUGHT THIS SORT OF THING WAS AGAINST HIS RELIGION, didn't
you? Don't worry. The man's just doing his job. At right, pope lifts girl at
Madison Square Garden last week as part of "Youth in Concert With Pope
John Paul II." 19,000 high school students were on hand to witness this
scene. To the left, pope blesses Sister Theresa Kane. Sister Kane, who is
fairly radical as nuns go, spoke in front of the pontiff and challenged him
to admit women to "all ministries of our church." He did not respond to
these remarks, but there were evidently no hard feelings between the two.
