Dump-Carter move hurting
Chrysler aid chances?
LANSING (UPI) - An early move by
top Michigan Democrats to dump
President Carter in favor of Sen. Ed-
ward Kennedy is jeopardizing federal
aid for ailing Chrysler Corp., a
Republican legislativeleader said
yesterday.
HOUSE GOP Leader William Bryant's
criticism focused on House Speaker
Bobby Crim and Attorney General
Frank Kelley, who two weeks ago led a
long parade of Democratic lawmakers
into the Kennedy camp.
"Mr. Kelley, Mr: Crim and others, for
their own selfish, political purposes,
are . . . alienating the Carter Ad-
ministration at the precise time when
state leaders are trying to gain the sup-
port of Carter for a Chrysler aid
package," Bryant said.
Crim, a Davison Democrat, declined
comment on the accusation.
"I HAVE NO comment on things like
that," he snapped.
"I'll talk to you for hours on anything
else but I'm not going to talk to you on
that,' he said.
Earlier, however, Crim had indicated
he did not believe his support for Ken-
nedy would affect the Carter Ad-
ministration's attitude on aid for the
financially struggling No.3 automaker.
GOV. WILLIAM Milliken "has not
put those two issues (Kennedy and
Chrysler) together," a spokesperson
said.
Bryant, a Grosse Pointe Farms
lawmaker known for his shoot-from
the-hip style, called the Crim-Kelley
announcement an "ill-timed attack on
the president."
HE SAIT IT "simply dares Mr. Car-
ter not to help Chrysler, by their saying=
he wouldn't dare oppose an aid package:
because such a decision on the part of,
Mr. Carter would be labeled a&
retaliation for their support of Sen.
Kennedy's candidacy."
"Their support at this time for Mr.a
Kennedy is an approach which I believe
shows dangerous "disregard for the.
potential of a regional depression if
Chrysler is forced to its knees," he said.
